I havent played with scanners in many years, but am getting ready to soon. The problem at hand is that I know that i need a trunking one, but I am not sure if I have to go with digital or not. I need to p/u ocean co. NJ fire and local police. Thanks in advance.

Looks like there is one police P25 system that is digital. If you want to hear that it will require a digital scanner. Everything else you would do fine with a analog trunking scanner. Click on the database at the top of the page, pick your state and pick your county. All your frequencies will be displayed, and on the right side it says "mode". If it says P25 that is a digital frequency. I see one but there may be others switching over. Best bet is to go into the NJ forum on this website and ask questions.
