Digital Radios

I don't understand why everyone is moving to Digital system. The audio is terrible, you could talk through a tunnel and get the same effect. Hopefully Motorola will get better.

Audio is really not that bad - they move to digital because Motorola sells all the pluses of digital without the negatives.

Are you listening on a system radio or a scanner?

Well, some of the reasoning includes a much better use of available bandwidth because a digital signal takes up a lot less space than an analog voice signal. This means more communication is possible in a smaller section of band.

I've had the opportunity to compare my PRO-96 with AGC off to an actual MARCS HT, and I must say that I preferred the PRO-96 over the HT, audio-wise...

The MARCS radio IS a real Motorola radio. I wasn't impressed. I thought the PRO-96 sounded a little better...

Radio Shack has a PRO-96 in operation at the mall, programmed with the Downriver Mutual Aid...reception isn't the best inside the mall, it works fine but the signal is pretty weak. The PRO-96 is going inbetween digital voice and static... My XTS3000 brings it in clear and several milliseconds before the PRO-96.

Two questions come to mind in your determination of audio clairty though.

Now, these scanners are built with really poor speakers...something like 250mw output...whereas other radios, namely motorolas have at least 500mw.

Second, the XTS3k, those with earlier digital signal processors don't sound all that great because the radio creates a little buzzing noise in with the audio, which has since been fixed granted my radio does it. My XTS2500 on the other hand, has a more recent DSP than the 3k does and sounds a lot better than the 3k, BUT, I still prefer the XTS3K for its hackability. I can't jam whatever flash I want and scan 16 talkgroups with the 2.5k

Reception: Don't forget that your antenna is tuned for the band your radio operates in. A scanner antenna is not... The RadioShack 800MHz antenna helps, though.

The speaker on the PRO-96 is 170mW, 8-ohm and 36mm... I stand by my observations. There was no "buzzing" sound in the MARCS portable.

The audio on my Motorola XTS5000 Vhf in Apco Digital mode sounds great. It sounds better then analog voice.

I find it hard to believe (actually I think it violates a law of physics ;> ) that converting analog voice to digital and then back to analog is a better representation than just staying analog...
