• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The only viable options right now are P25, DMR/MOTOTRBO and NXDN. There are no and probably never will be any part 90 Fusion or D-star radios. What digital can get you is plug and play mulit site connection across the state or across the country, if that's legal. A number of P25 and DMR/MOTO repeaters are designed for mulit site use.
Do we have your word on that? Yaesu and Icom gotta have an outlet for their crummy digital.

Personally I've never had a need to use someone else's GMRS repeater.
The beauty of gmrs IS repeaters!!! In my area, there's only 1 that is operational(600 162.2)...and by group of hams too. In Chicagoland...ALOT!!!!...and some linked as well. Very nice and all FM.

At one time I had four GMRS repeaters, three on high mountain top sites all on the same freq and a fourth repeater on a different freq where we put the freeloaders.

Yes, but GMRS is not part 90. If you're going to turn the 8 measly repeater pairs to play ham radio and change all the rules, you mine as well be able to use whatever you want. If you're going to turn it into a cluster, you'll mine as well not half a** it and hit it out of the park.

I am a lineman for the county.
There is no convincing me that I need a digital hammer.

Pneumatic nailers are awful nice if you do a lot of hammering. Different tools for different applications.

So, by some of the arguments I'm reading here, I shouldn't be allowed to use a nail gun because some random stranger may want to borrow it and they don't own an air compressor.

Yes, a very poor strawman, just like some of the others.

That's 100 percent correct. That's why there is a thing called the ham band if you want to do a lot of digital.

Well then you're just going to have to take your ball and go home.. LOL.

Anyway, Hope you're doing well buddy!

Ha! Good answer.

Just trying to keep things stirred up.

And for the record, I have no idea what the FCC will do. None of us know, and it's all guessing. Glad I don't have all my eggs in the GMRS basket.

These forums would become boring if we didn't!

Oh I hear ya...

My biggest thing is I don't want us to not have repeaters available anymore. It almost happened in 2017, and the FCC I have a feeling doesn't want to deal with petty GMRS, enforcement, or big changes. Like I said before, the easiest thing to do for them would be to nix repeaters and allow digital, which wouldn't be ideal. I'd rather have analog with repeaters. I'm not sure many feel the way I do.

I know. It was getting boring there for a few minutes.

Nice thing was that the FCC did a long comment period when they redid the GMRS rules and seemed to listen to what everyone was saying. It took a long time to actually roll it out as a rule update.

I doubt that the FCC would just dump changes on GMRS without some serious input. That's not usually the way they operate on ham or other personal radio services.

While I let my GMRS license expire many years back, and I don't technically have a dog in this fight, I do want to see GMRS be a usable radio service for a long time to come. I'm not sure my son has any interest in getting his ham ticket, and GMRS may be more suited for him.

Standby, let me stir things up:

GMRS should become part of the 70 CM amateur radio band. 1500 watts should be allowed, but CW only.

Prove me wrong.
So I get to listen to people talk about their hemorrhoids via Morse code and high power!?

COOL!
