To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am a lineman for the county.

"The objective of this effort is to further determine how modern narrowband digital systems might co‐exist with traditional analog FM systems on shared channels in the GMRS in a metropolitan area. These findings could help establish whether digital operation would be in the public interest. During and after this experimental period, we will document any technical, operational and/or regulatory regime may promote co‐existence, if any."

And you forfeited audio quality when you gave up the vinyl for CDs. I think you should be a huge fan of digital radio formats. Analog FM's ten or more KHz of transmission media vs just a few KHz for digital, DMR, Fusion, D-Star, P25, etc.

Vinyl and vacuum tubes. The only way get a true, full, rich reproduction of recorded sound.

I've seen that work but not well enough to use outside of a amateur radio garage system.

So basically the same as most GMRS systems. ;). I had incredibly good luck testing it on a Part 90 Hytera system. There were absolutely no issues at all. Worked just as well as a standard repeater.

And it is only going to get better as more companies start implementing the technology. As the pairs fill up, especially VHF, this will absolutely be the future. And you get the bonus of no duplexer, separate antennas, etc.

My GMRS systems were top notch repeaters with really good master receive preselectors and Angle Linear preamps hooked to 10dB sticks with proper downtilt on 5,000ft mountain tops. They probably worked better than a lot of commercial systems. The only experience I have with single freq DMR repeat is the Anytone mobile and its not very good.

Oh no, no, no. I don't own a 578 (yet) but heard more or less the same when it came to the single frequency stuff. Try it sometime using a real repeater and I think you will be pretty impressed. No different than using any other repeater. It's actually really cool.

I use DMR through mostly the PAPA system repeaters and the Anytone works great there. Its when you try to use the Anytone as the single freq repeater with hand helds where it doesn't work very well.

Right...that's exactly what I have heard. It's when you are using the 578 as the "repeater" that it doesn't work well. The crossband repeater (analog and DMR) work fine, supposedly, but it still has issues with the single frequency repeater. I've heard a lot of Anytones on the PAPA system, and they always sound great. I own a couple 878s, but haven't bought a 578 yet.

You mean like....ALL REPEATERS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

A digital repeater would obviously do the same.

Actually NO. DMR repeaters can operate on a single frequency, using one timeslot as the input, and the other timeslot as the output. Doing so means the repeater does NOT tie up two frequencies, but only one. And that eliminates the need for a duplexer (because the repeater never transmits and receives simultaneously), and means that if subscribers are programmed to RX either timeslot, the transition between simplex and repeater use is transparent to the user.

There's a bug in the current version of the 578 firmware that prevents full-power TX when in single-frequency repeater mode. But that's an issue fixable via firmware update, and only applies to that model radio.

I would absolutely love for the FCC to allow digital on GMRS. I would make both of my GMRS repeaters Cap+ systems and link the two together. Way better use of the spectrum in my opinion.

The LINKING is being done....TODAY!!....and on FM.

I'll ask AGAIN.....who's digital?!?!?

And since you and others think DMR is gonna be the cure all, what about ME, who wants to run P25, or others who want to run NXDN, and another set of folks who want to run TETRA, and SO ON..................................................

Let's just leave well enough alone. FM is doing just fine.

Nobody is pushing for DMR as the only digital option. If you want NXDN or YSF or P25, whatever floats your boat.

I already have two GMRS repeaters on the My GMRS network and they are linked, but you only get a single channel out of each repeater. With a Cap+ DMR repeater, you can have a lot of talkgroups, two of which can be used at the same time without users interfering with each other. Cap+ is a trunking protocol, so you basically get a 2-channel trunking system out of each repeater.

Honestly, it doesn't matter which digital is used as long as they open it up for digital. Nobody else in my area had any repeaters on GMRS, so I put two on the air. If you are a ham, I have 7 other repeaters that are DMR, P25 and analog.

You seem very against digital on GMRS and that is your prerogative. Are you hoping that the FCC will never allow it? Would you be open to digital on GMRS if the FCC allowed it? I got a huge amount of flak when I made public my plans to make my first analog ham repeater a DMR repeater. I was told by more than a few that I could not take away the analog access. I have never asked for donations of any kind for the repeaters that I own and maintain, so when folks started telling me how to run my repeater, it rubbed me the wrong way. I ended up purchasing a combiner, so the old analog repeater could still be used after the DMR repeater went live. It was a 5-channel combiner, so I added more repeaters. That is when I put my first GMRS repeater on the air. I then added some P25 Quantars to the same combiner. The point I'm making is just because the FCC allows the use of digital doesn't mean that analog will disappear. I could very easily keep the old analog GMRS repeaters and run a digital one through the combiner.

Maybe when you get to a METRO AREA and listen to the CURRENT FM traffic, you'll probably ask yourself, do I want this digital mess...NATIONWIDE?!?!?! Just in my little NLR Ark area, there's alot of USLESS chatter on the frequencies, and you want to add digital to that mix?!?!?!? REALLY?!?!?!?!?!
Nobody else in my area had any repeaters on GMRS
And your Cap+ repeater is gonna help my P25 radio and other modes HOW?!?! I bet your FM repeater would help me and OTHERS out very well today, eh.

What gave you the CLUE?!?!?!

Review PRIOR comment about metro areas.

And btw, I have a LOVE for MMDVM repeaters, but not on GMRS!!!!

GMRS would turn into...... you motorboatin' sum-b****!

There is a reason why the FCC said no. Read my previous post. I don't think the FCC really wants to get involved with that cluster. Co-locating someones analog and digital repeaters on the limited available frequencies probably wouldn't be a wise choice. Just the simple fact that digital can false certain analog PL tones would be a nightmare, among many others.

I have a feeling that if digital was allowed you'd get sneaky loophole finders who by all rights should be Part 90 or SMR setting up closed repeaters everywhere and dominating the available spectrum. Don't think the FCC would ride in on a white horse to save the day - we all see how well current rules are enforced. Analog FM seems to be working just fine, honestly.

Agreed. The problem with GMRS is the limited available spectrum and the lack of repeater coordination. It would be a cluster that the FCC probably has no intentions on entering.
