so im thinking about buying a pro96. i want to listen to fire communications only. my fear is that ill buy a pro96 and then in a year or two a better model will come out and ill be left with an outdated piece of equipment. does anyone know if there are plans for a new model scanner in the near future? thanks for your help.

With that 'fear', you will never buy a scanner (or a PC). There will always be something better/smaller/faster on the horizon.

The pro97 is not an improvement over the pro96. The pro97 is not a digital scanner, will not work in many parts of this country.

Scanners are like computers, there is always going to be a newer model coming out.

People should only comment on subjects they know and understand.

Maybe the 97 is better in the area which he lives. The pro-97 is better than the 96 if you don't have the bones to throw down for the 96 and the 96 is better if you need digital. Just comes down to what you want to listen to and how much you got or are willing to spend on a scanner. In the area I live the 97 is better no one is digital except the prisons and TSA. A few Tulsa talkgroups are digital but encrypted. So the pro 97 can be better than the 96 or the 96 can be better than the 97 all depends on where you live.

A more realistic fear would be that shortly after spending $500+ on a digital scanner, your entire county (or that part you care to listen to) then goes 100% encrypted.
