Directional Whip?

Hi all,

Is it possible to add, if only slightly, a component of directionality to a whip antenna by painting one half of it with something? I know it probably sounds silly, but was wondering if my handheld scanner could somehow operate as a crude radio wave locator.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
