Discone in the attic

Does a discone that is mounted in the attic need to have any sort of ground plane :?:

Nope; if you look at the construction, the radials that point downward form the other half of the ground the antenna needs. So no extra radials are necessary. Just keep it away as far as possible from metal flashings on the roof, wiring and so forth - maybe not so easy a task on some attics - and you should be good to go. Nearby wiring and metal objects can detune it.

Hi Robert, I have my discone sitting on the roof stand in my spare bedroom and it works great for me.

how well do these discones work in the attic? i have one on order and was planning on puttin it on my old tv ant. pole right outside the house. if it works good in the attic i wont have to run all that xtra feed line.

I currently have my Diamond D-130J up in the attic. It's working wonderfully...much better than the stock antenna I was using. I will mount it outside when Spring gets here and all this snow is gone! More snow here for the next couple of days...ooof!

I have a diamond discone in my attic and it seems to work great. I get the best performance in the VHF band.

I used RG-6 Quad Shield cable for the antenna run with high quality compression "F" connectors. I'm not transmitting on the antenna so the 75 Ohm cable really isn't an issue. Seems to work just fine.

Nice to have an antenna you can use if there are thunderstorms about, too.

My attic antenna right now is a home made 3 element cubical quad for VHF. My radioshack rotor never had it so good!
