I heard that they were going to discontinue this radio ssystem and go with something different. Any thoughts on new type of system etc?

Not very likely. They were just appropriated a large sum of money last year to replace all the mobiles and portables and upgrade other parts of the system. However it is still the same system just upgraded. At some point as part of the upgrade it may be switched to P25 Phase II.
I agree with John, with the recent investments they've made in hardware, I believe STARS is here to stay for a while.

Would you mind sharing where you heard this? The State probably has over a billion dollars invested in this system.
I think there is probably confusion between the DVRS subsystem (Virginia - Virginia State Police DVRS Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference) and the main STARS system (Virginia Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) Trunking System, Statewide, Virginia - Scanner Frequencies)
I don't think I've ever heard any traffic on DVRS, so I avoided it a few weeks ago to quit fishin' where they ain't. But STARS is quite busy.

You would have to be close to an active DVRS to be able to hear anything.
They would be a few watts output, into a mobile antenna, mounted less than 2m above the ground.
"We're getting new radios" may have gotten turned into "We/They are getting a new radio system" as the info was passed around.

What are the best p25 phase 1 settings to receive more towers and talkgroups? Example I can receive Salem 1 on my radioshack pro 106 but not on my whistler trx1 or trx2 scanners? Both are connected by an outdoor antenna.

I'm with Fredva on this. No way they would install an entire new system after spending so much on this unless there was a serious problem that could not be fixed. That's not the case.

Heard next set of Motorola updates before the end of 2022 would Encrypt dispatch and tac channels. Also heard that new radios would have the capability to encrypt. What have you all heard?
