Discovered problem with scanner

Thank you to the two guys that sent me the suggestions.
I discovered what the problem was on the weekend, the RCMP have not moved, it's my antenna.
This antenna that came with the receiver has served me well for ten years but all of a sudden it's no longer sensitive enough to pick up some frequencies.
I've attached a second telescoping antenna on to it which has made it longer and helps bring in the RCMP again, but the reception quality is only 50% of what it used to be.
Can anyone recommend a website where I can buy a better antenna?, also I plan to buy a new digital scanner at Xmas and would like a recommendation there as well.
I used to pick up the Fredericton City police but they went digital about five years ago, I'm hoping that a digital scanner will solve that problem.

Are you sure, I can't understand how an antenna would behave this way. Is it a back of set antenna? Have you tried hooking this 'bad' antenna to another reciever? If it's not a back of set, have you changed the coax, it will degrade after time and you would notice reception issues. Forgive me, but I really can't see how an antenna would just go bad. My first thought would actually be to see if the radio got damaged by static/electrical surge. Fire Dept's tend to be pretty strong to begin with, so on a radio that had been overloaded, it would still pick up close, strong signals.

Have you checked the connection of the antenna mount on the unit to the circuit board inside? A crack in the solder to leave you hearing nothing as well.
