I have a couple more questions on installing a discriminator tap. Where do I connect the ground to? What do I install between the wire and the chip?a capacitor? What kind of plug do I need?(RS Product numbers would be great) Are there programs to decode MDC-1200 and Quick Call 2?

I've done a few taps. I use shielded audio cable. Best to locate the ground pin on the chip and solder the cable shield to it (be careful to avoid shorting out pins of the IC or to anything else nearby).

You can use any audio connector but best to avoid ones that are used for other things. Avoid power connectors. Panel mount RCA jacks are good, usually need a 1/4" hole if you mount it permanently. With a careful job, the value of the radio should actually increase if you decide to sell it.

For chip pin nummbers, it depends on the chip. Most discrimator chips are the DIP package, or SOIC (a smaller version). One end of the package has a notch centered at one end, or there may be a small dot or depression indicating pin 1. If you look at the package with this end pointing "up", pin 1 will be in the upper left corner. The pins increase going down the left side, across and up the right side (counter-clockwise). A diagram would be alot faster, I know...
