I'm not in any way bashing Uniden here as I have several of their scanners and like their products...but...the smartest thing they could do right now is change the upgrades to free (to match Whistler) and come out with that announcement. Then refund any charges by those who have already pre-ordered. Otherwise they likely are not going to look very good if the Whistler upgrades work just as well and are free. And definitely won't if they work better. I guess time will tell!

Whistler just one up'ed Uniden in a big way!!!

Now will uniden counter that, I HIGHLY doubt it.

I just hope we don't have to wait that long since we paid, I like Uniden, but want to see how they handle this

Mostly it will not be public service users. General business type stuff in most cases. Not very interesting unless you have a very specific target system of personal interest.

I logged into myuniden clicked "Register A Product" then selected BCD436HP but the serial number box will only let me enter 12 digits but the scanner has 14 after then SN??

I know it's already been mentioned, but as it is sure to come up again...

It's asking for a Serial number, not the ESN. The two are identical except that the ESN has a 260 in place of the z, so to convert from ESN to SN replace the 260 with a z. The ESN will be asked for later along with the checksum.

the extreme upgrade for the HP radios went from $100 to $50. I don’t remember if there was any early adoption pricing for that.

It was $50 for early adopters. Then it went to $100, then back down to $50.

It makes sense that Whistler would offer it free. Uniden likely has many more units in the field (last I heard it was about a 10:1 Uniden:Whistler ratio) and by having more they would end up paying more in licensing fees. It's a sound financial sabotage tactic on Whistler's part. When you try to take down the big guy on top of the hill, make him come down to your level (or try to lure him there).

Please tell me the DMR talkgroups will not need to be entered, but will automatically be shown in the display when received on DMR?

Already mentioned it does when programmed appropriately.

In other words, fall into Whistler's trap? Why would they want to do that? As I mentioned above, it's a brilliant tactical strategy if Uniden takes the bait. I would think they are smarter than that.

I have to wonder how much Whistler is going to lose giving it away to existing models when they have to pay for the licenses. They have to be better that their sales will exceed the fees in the short term (a strategy that didn't work out so well for Radio Shack). Long term doesn't look as rosy unless they are being subsidized by another division of the company.

no necessarily i'm in West Memphis, AR today listening to a DMR system for WMPD
was in West Central Georgia (Taylor County) and several sheriffs departments in the area use DMR as well, yes its not as popular but probably a cheaper alternative than P25 im guessing.

On DMR? It's public safety like crazy around here.

Two or three agencies - two cities and one county - have DMR (TRBO) public safety here. A number of others have NXDN systems in use, both trunked and non-trunked, so I'm hoping NXDN comes down the Uniden pipe sometime soon as well.

Just because entities in one part of the world don't use a particular type of radio/protocol doesn't mean it isn't in wide use elsewhere.

Thanks Voyager--- I've very excited about the DMR upgrade--- you probably know me from the AOR forum and I know that there is plenty to listen to on DMR here in NYC. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm anxious to get on board with DMR trunking since the DV1 does not trunk.

Will likely put in my pre-orders tomorrow for my 436 and 536.

UPMan,

Please allow non North American ESN's (such as those used in Australia, eg: 37601-) to be entered into your preregistration form. Also while you are at it, I repeat my previous request to allow international credit cards or have Paypal facilities.

You are missing out on a further source of revenue.

R

Also will the current UBCD436-PT and 536PT will also be eliglble ? :)

I ask for the same question.

Ditto. Impossible to even ask Uniden the question since when you try and register they demand you enter a state but only provide a list of US States and Canadian provinces.

How about a "Not in US or Canada" option???

I originally registered my BCD436HP by fudging the state as Iowa (!) and entering my full address including country in other fields.

However attempting to purchase this firmware upgrade now failed because the system doesn't allow international addresses, nor does the credit card verification recognise such an address.

We need to be patient :)

I noticed UPMAN stated that the upgrade for DMR is 50 dollars for a limited time. What will the normal upgrade price be after the limited time? Did I miss the thread on the normal price for the upgrade? Reason why I ask is other scanner manufacturers are offering free upgrades to counter this move and I am afraid I am going to Upgrade myself out of this radio after already spending 100 bucks on Pro Voice for both my scanners. Now I have to Pay and additional 100 bucks? I get the whole cost for Licenses and stuff but nobody wants to pay if they don't have to. I also get that I don't have to upgrade but we are all consumers and want the best buy for the money we can. I truly love competition, let the games begin.

Please keep in mind this isn't the Tavern.

I've deleted a lot of off-topic posts that had nothing at all to do with this thread.
