In Indiana, if the place you want to work has an IDACS terminal, you'll have to get your IDACS certification.

You need:
1: clean criminal history
2: type fast
3: listen well
4: talk clearly on phone and radio
5: handle stress

People don't realize whats really involved in the job, it's not for everyone, and the average is 5 years so turnover is high and the above are minimum requirements.....

2 + 2 = 4; breathing, pass a background check...
keyboarding skills help, for FD EMS first responder/EMT certs for Medical dispatching.

In other words nothing hard, in fact sometimes too easy.

There is no set standard in law for Indiana.
Someday all 911 operators will have to be EMD certified, which is a 4 day course, but the state hasn't started enforcing that yet.
Most places, you get on the job training, to include EMD, IDACS, CAD, Radio, everything else.

If you want to become a dispatcher there are 2 things that you NEED, to be successful.

1) Know the area where you want to work. It makes training alot easier.

2) Be able to multi-task. It is a requirement, and no amount of training will teach you how.

Not around here. That's for sure. being able to handle Stress is the main thing. It can be overwheling at times. On any given night things can go from zero to one hundred in 1 second.

You might stop by the VU police station and see if they have any openings for cadets. This would be a good way to get your foot in the door.
