Switched it on about 11am to listen to the Maritime Net on 40m and pooof...display is black just like it is turned off. I still have audio when I turn the dial on memory banks. I have tried everything including a new sd card - nada. On hold forever at Icom so I guess I will try them again on Monday. Argh. Anybody ever experienced this problem before?

That's a bummer. I own two R8600's and never had a display issue with either except once when I accidentally let some LCD touch screen cleaner and anti-static spray get below the front bezel from me spraying too much on the cleaning towel I was using! I didn't realize I'd applied so much cleaner onto the towel that I could have wrung liquid from it!
The screen stopped responding to touch until I dried it out with a fan. Never another problem since that mistake.

Do the LED's on your front panel still light up when the LCD screen goes dark?

I wonder if someone could walk you through the menu button press's needed to get to the reset screen where you could try and perform a total reset even though you can't see anything. I don't know if that would work and it definitely won't work if your screen is also not responding to any touch input. I don''t think there's another way to do a factory default reset without using the touch screen for parts of the reset procedure.

You did not accidentally hold the P.Lock button in for a couple seconds did you? That blanks the display but that button should turn on a white LED on the left side of that button if you did that.
If that button has the white LED lit, hit the button again to bring the display back. With that lit though, the other controls should also not work so I doubt it's that simple.

Good luck with it and hopefully it will be something very simple.

Oh, did you try it with no SD card at all? I know you tried a different card but in reality, no card is needed to operate the 8600.
I assume you are also removing all power sources for several minutes as well. Maybe pull the power while the radio is on which should help drain any caps quickly.

this has happened tp me a few times. I have no idea what happened. It's almost like the 8600 is overloaded. I lose scope (turns black) audio gets very low. If I turn the power off then back on, the screen , scope and signal is like they are at maximum settings. This is most notable on HF. If I'm scanning it seems this issue never occurs.
It comes and goes. The 8600 will run for many weeks without this happening, then it occurs intermittently.

Per page 12-2 of the manual you could try

Turn off the receiver power

While holding down v/m and m/w push power .

All reset is displayed on the operating screen.

Well the tech tried everything over the phone and nada - packed and shipped to Icom yesterday. He said it sounded like a 'fried board'...I asked for an estimate and he said he couldn't give one until he had a true diagnosis and not a guess. So that's where we are :( I already miss my 8600.

Got it back Wed and boy don't I feel like an idiot. Seems I locked up the radio with the screensaver function somehow. I have no idea how that could have happened. I wish I knew so that it doesn't happen again. It seems a tech could have talked me thru this over the phone. I haven't even scratched the surface of what this radio can do, as I simply have my favorite frequencies in a group scan and have not ventured too far from that. I've got a shortwave broadcast group, an hf utility group, an hf USAF group, etc. The last thing I was doing when I apparently engaged the screensaver was dxing the hf band and fiddling with filters. Chalk this one up to OE and be done with it. Is there an IC-R8600 For Dummies book out there? ;)

If you hold the P.LOCK button in for about 2 seconds or so, it will turn off the display. That setting sticks through a power cycle also but you usually see part of the bootup info screen before it goes blank as it's powering up.
A quick tap of the P.LOCK button while the screen is blank will restore it to normal. That button is below the power button.

Gator I'd rather feel like an idiot than having a for-real busted R8600! Great news:)
