I caught my display going black when I first got the receiver. I haven't found the part about the screen saver in the manual. Like everything else in the 8600, it is all programmable. You could probably deactivate it.
I just grounded both the 8600 (to a water pipe) & my mast, which is 3 5' Rohn mast sections from eBay, I used a prof. grade pipe clamp to attach to the mast. Drove in a nice 4' copper ground rod. Our soil is acid, so that means good conductivity. After grounding I felt not only safer but also note maybe a slight improvement: 45-46 dbu increased to 48-49. It may just be conditions. But I'm listening to a NY Center transmitter in Yardley, PA, & that is about 10 miles distant but my antenna is only 15' AGL. So I'm very satisfied with mine.
