Disturbance in Kent

Around 8 PM tonite, a disturbance began in a neighborhood near the Kent State University campus. Officers were pelted with bottles. Mutual aid was provided by the county sheriff as well as OSP troopers. A bonfire was started in the street. The METRO SWAT team has been requested, and a fourth alarm EMS MABAS was just struck. At time of posting, an unknown number of people have been arrested. Monitor this on 155.310 for the police and 154.235 for fire.

I was in the middle of all this and it was just crazy. Everything was going smoothly throughout the day for an event called "collegefest." It is a day/night long party on College Street in Kent. Everything was going good until around 8 PM when students said police arrested a girl and threw her on the ground. This is what started the riot off. Through out the night there were numerous fires along college street and students were tearing down street signs and anything they could get ahold of. As the police started pushing the students back with tear gas and rubber ball projectiles the students then went to a few buildings on campus near college street and vandalized them. There were numerous police and fire/ems units from around the area and farther. All in all there were around 125 arrests. The radio traffic was packed and all units were constantly busy until around 2:30 AM.

This event has now actually made the national news. My friend in Austin, TX called to tell me he saw it on the news there. Go Kent!!!!

I was picking up MARCS traffic on that talkgroup of 63648 on Friday afternoon. I think they were doing some kind of drug sting at Nelson Ledges park in Garrettsville on that channel. Heard them making several busts.

When I was around 14 or 15, many of the kids around Lake County would talk about how great "The Ledges" were. They said it was the perfect place to get any drug you could ever want...

It's nice to see that more than 10 years later, Portage County officials have figured that out too.






And as for the Kent State disturbance: I am VERY disappointed with the way Kent Police handled the incident...

Those drunken morons should've been tasered and tear-gassed the moment they started chucking beer bottles at officers.
