To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have been looking for a new handheld to replace my HH. I have looked at a lot and want to stay with name brands. I also scan a lot of public service frequencies. Since a lot of systems have gone to digital P25 as compared to Ham digitals I have been looking at the Alinco DJ-MD5XLT Dual Band, without going up to a commercial brand for the fact that it covers frequencies that have four or five decimal places after the initial frequencies ( 154.8525) where Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom I have not found a duel band radio that does and seems Alinco is one of few?
Are you able to program a priority channel in the DJ-MD5XLT? I also what the scan speed it, I am not sure who needs 4-5000 channels, especially where I live.
If someone could suggest another HH I would also appreciate it. I would like to stay with major brands and not knock offs and stay away from expensive ham handhelds. Mine is 1994, works well though I think it may be time to upgrade. 73's Bruce

I'm confused by this statement. That radio is DMR, not P25. If you want to listen to P25 traffic that radio won't do it.

Yes, it be confusing when systems are not the same C4FM compared with Public Service. Trying to find a 2m/440 with both digital modes is impossible, I have always liked monitoring repeater inputs as well as output frequencies. Public Service uses P25 systems, carrying 2 radios is something I prefer not to do. I didn't want to go up to a professional radio, I may end up going with 2m with P25 professional I was thinking were the above Alincio with the freq steps allowing further freq range (in this case 5) not necessarily thinking even so that the additional ones would be C4FM and not P25. Quite the confusing dilemma. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks Bruce

Just a note, this doesn't have anything to do with encryption or software other than the reception of open public service frequencies, having monitored over 50+ years and only transmitting within my ham license. Thanks Bruce

Buy a 2m/70cm amateur radio handheld and buy a P25-capable scanner. Carry two radios.

The Alinco radio you are talking about is an analog/DMR radio. It doesn't decode P25 and it doesn't decode Yaesu System Fusion.

I have had a 2m/70cm for 30 years almost and figured it was time for a new one. Always liked Yaesu. Did not really have to think about it till some went to the P-25 and Amateur is C4. I really did not want to go the route of two radio's so I was looking for another way. As in the last post I realized even if the ham radio may have been able to scan more after the decimal that it would still be unable to decode the P-25 signal. I have playing some catch up with digital. My only other choice is to go for a Motorola that covers the 2m band, since there is not a lot of 70cm around here. There are a few Yaesu's I like. Thanks for the suggestion. 73's

Anyone that has a Alinco DJ-MD5XLT know the scan speed? (not sure to post it here, or start a new thread for the specific question, if it appears under this particular one) I try to avoid double posting. Thanks for any help
