Well Whistler agreed to make these scanners for Radio Shack. If Radio Shack ask for it the firmware upgrade (a fee may be involved) then the upgrade should be released to Radio Shack for them to distribute how they see fit.

It all depends on what their original contract was. Maybe Whistler is hoping all the RS people will move to their brand. I seriously doubt that they're obligated to do anything for RS now.

They are building Radio Shack new PRO668's PRO651's and PRO652's not sure why you would not think they would not. When Radio Shack 1st filed I sent a letter to WhistlerWendy the answer I got back is all repairs, updates, ect would come from Radio Shack and guess what we got a firmware update after Radio Shack was sold. Now there are new updates on the PRO651 and PRO652 web pages on the Radio Shack pages. I bet they were not left by the SCANNER FAIRY.

You guys do realize Radio Shack is just giving you some canned answer based on past practice right? Whistler has been pretty clear in their statements that the radio shack branded version will not get the update. So keep dreaming guys.

This cash-strapped working college student can hold out hope though, right? Like the others in this thread have stated, RS has made firmware updates for their other scanners available recently so I'm not sure why you think a DMR upgrade for the 668 is impossible. I digress though...

Whistler Group made the decision to climb into bed with radio shack for the sole purpose of raising the GRE-COM Phoenix from the ashes. They needed a brick and mortar presence to legitimize their online persona. In so doing the deals they have made are done! The products they have produced (regardless of to whom name has been applied to the packaging) has been produced. The obligations they have attached themselves are so "Obliged". Wonder how we should associate this failure in customer issue resolutions to other brands that have chosen to better their market share by associating themselves with failed brands???? I think the more specific question that I am asking is whom else still pursues their relationships with the "Failed Brand" "Radio Shack", and to what extent can I reliably expect those brands to supply support based upon this issue???? Hmmm....

If everyone were allowed to jump on the same band wagon. They could just sell through some other soon to be failed venture while utilizing false marketing and market under another name with complete impunity, I guess I should just say "Welcome to America". Right?

Before long, "Radio Shack" will become a meaningless trademark such as "RCA", and sold / traded around like a blonde bimbo cheerleader gets passed around by the high school basketball team.

I sent Radioshack a message through their FB page and here is the response I got back.

We're seeing a large uptick in these questions and I'm trying my best to get an answer from our team.

Good - Maybe they'll do the right thing then. Hope so anyway.

Either that or lets all hope someone on here knows how to program and finds a way to convert a Pro-668 to a 1080 :)

As I said earlier, I am glad someone has received some response from RS. I sent my email on May 29th and have not received one peep from them. It is possible they will not respond to every single one if they have gotten a large number of them. However, I think it would be a nice courtesy if they would at least acknowledge each with a form email.

Obviously from my posts on this subject, I have pretty low expectations from Radio Shack. But, "just for the halibut" I posted directly to their public relations FB page about a DMR firmware upgrade for the Pro-668. The next day I got the exact same answer that others have gotten, word-for-word. I'll believe it when I see it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Whistler's DMR upgrade for the WS 1080 is in beta stage right now, too, just like Uniden's.

That is also my feelings on this as well. Quite honestly, the DMR upgrade is not something that I am anxiously awaiting, as I have little in my area. Particularly anything I wish to monitor. However, I know for some it is something they really want to have. But I tend to be pessimistic about this, and would not be shocked if it doesn't happen. But on the flip side, if it does, then I will be pleasantly surprised even if it is not critical to me personally.

That is my understanding, a work in progress that will likely be refined over time.
