Thinking of getting a new handheld scanner to use out and about in the KC metro area. Likely a Uniden BCD436HP or SDS100, since I already have a BCD536HP at home.

Is anyone in the KC area using DMR, NXDN or ProVoice? Not sure if there is any reason to spring for those upgrades.

Any thoughts on whether one scanner is significantly better than the other for local use?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Depends what you want to listen to. There is 2Way/commercial system in UHF with about 40+ frequencies that is DMR. It is used by many local businesses from St Joe to Cass co. No PD/FD/EMS on that system, tho some Rural Elec Coops are. On VHF some of the outlying ELectric Coops are DMR or NX. Further out some rural PD/SOs are DMR, but I do not know of any in the Metro area. If you really want to dig, look here for licensees authorized for NX or DMR (tho not necessarily using these modes): United States Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Frequency Search
The KCATA busses are now DMR on UHF, Cerner is DMR, The Parking Spot at KCI, Park Hill High School, KCPL etc.
What do you want to listen to?

EDACS/Provoice is pretty much extinct in this area. If you want to monitor DMR, this system carries listen-worthy stuff from time to time. It's mostly occupied by property security companies, a few private ambulance services, taxis, and tow operators. Truman Medical Center uses NXDN as does a few other places. Public safety is almost exclusively P25 in the KC area now. Like Wbloss said above, it all depends on what you're interested in listening to.
