• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Two quick questions...

1) How can you tell if a DMR system is using RAS? Is this information listed in the ULS Licensing System? The reason I ask is some DMR systems I can hear on my SDS100 but not on my AnyTone 878.

2) Is this link being updated at all?

No. The FCC is not informed about RAS. No reason to, as it isn't part of the license, any more than encryption is, etc.

The biggest hint is that you are picking it up on your scanner but not the Anytone. Sounds like RAS to me.

Here is the response that I received from Anytone on the subject and this is why the Anytone Radios won't receive a DMR signal with RAS.

Thank you for the information. Sorry to tell you, we were informed by Motorola the RAS feature is not available for our license with Motorola.

Motorola Solutions' proprietary Restricted Access to System (RAS) feature is not available for license.

So, the casual interloper might invest in a DMR radio because he knows his local system target is DMR, only to be rebuffed by the RAS feature. The same end result for a scanner listener as encryption - you just can't hear it. Is this seen as an option for sys admins to implement as an alternative to DMR encryption? I am curious as to the financial options for network admins - E vs RAS - which is more affordable and why? Am I asking too many questions? Just new to DMR, folks. It has opened the door to a fresh new aspect of ham radio, and a brand new world for me. I have a pigtail lead to my 878 from my AR-270b 2m/440 rooftop antenna and all I can say is wow.

No, they are two entirely different things. RAS is used to keep unauthorized users off the system. If your radio doesn't have a matching key (or Radio ID, or both), you cannot transmit on the system, and with most radios (aside from scanners), you cannot listen either.

Encryption obscures the communications entirely, for both radios and scanners, but does nothing to keep unauthorized users off the system.

Used together, they work very well.

RAS is to keep unauthorized/unwanted subscribers from utilizing a DMR conventional repeater or DMR trunked system. Nothing more or less. As stated, contrary to popularly spread misinformation, RAS CAN be utilized on part 97 as it is NOT encryption nor "obscure the meaning of transmissions" which is prohibited, it just keeps a repeater essentially private/exclusive access to only those who have the RAS key but the voice traffic is 100 percent "in the clear" as evidenced by it being monitored on a scanner, SDR, etc.

It is proprietary to MotoTRBO subscribers. It is closed repeater owner's dream.

RAS intention is to keep unauthorized subscribers from accessing a repeater. Encryption is intended to keep unwanted eavesdropping of communications.
