I initially set up some ham UHF DMR repeaters just by frequency and "NAC/Color Code" Search. It appeared that I need a fairly strong signal to hear anything. After getting the release firmware, I added several systems as "DMR One Frequency" and loaded all the talkgroups. I discovered that the scanner would stop on the "conventional" frequency and show the received color code, but there would be nothing when I switched to the DMR system I created. I got the system to start decoding when I dropped the squelch setting to zero. I'm using an external antenna, so I should have no issue receiving the repeater about 12 miles away.
This may also play into the UHF sensitivity discussion in bearcat's thread, but clearly dropping the squelch setting to zero is not a workable solution. Has anyone else noted this behavior with DMR systems?
Thank you for your hard work! What's the next project we can help with?
The 'work-around' for poor UHF reception on the 436 is generally targeted at the situation when using a top-mounted (by design) duck-type (portable) antenna. It isn't likely to solve problems if you are using an external antenna. However, you may want to give it a shot if you can get your hands on a piece of tape (we all seem to be buy whole rolls of it - 10 feet, etc.) - or you could wait for Uniden to agree there is a problem and wait for their solution.
I guess I missed the sale, I went to do the DMR upgrade and it's now $60.00.
FYI: IT Guy caught up on his work. I believe the $50 has now moved up to $60. Thanks to all the early adopters. Once the database support is added, we'll move the price up to the final price (I expect to do this on 10/1, but that is just an expectation, not a promise).
