I know this question has probably already been asked..so my apologies in advance.

I know this is a vague question but -in general-, is it best to keep this setting on "Auto" or a different number

Some systems you have to use manual and try different settings.

Use Auto unless you have issues with a particular system. If Auto doesn't work well, the optimal manual values will vary from system to system.
