More Doña Ana County news: Sunland Park Fire adds Truck 53 (Twitter/X).



Sunland Park Fire Dispatch on DTRS is still unencrypted, though encrypted TAC channels are often used. Incident summaries, including photographs, are typically posted to Twitter/X. Radio aliases are prefixed with "DA-SPFD", but I haven't seen an alias specific to Truck 53 just yet (though I wasn't monitoring during the Push In Ceremony).

On the last day of April, I learn that it had been Animal Control Appreciation Month (LinkedIn).

County and city Animal Control both appear to rely heavily on Computer-Aided Dispatch, as intake records often appear on the animal shelter's website while the animal is still on the truck.

In the jurisdiction of the City of Las Cruces, Animal Control Officers are part of the police department, and can be heard communicating with Central Dispatch on "channel 2" (EDACS 02-122, P25 11354). On EDACS, there is an "LCPD Code/AC" channel, 02-127, but I've never heard Animal Control on it, and it's referred to on air as "codes". (Codes Enforcement is also part of the police department, but they will call for a patrol officer in the event an arrest needs to be made.)

The Las Cruces Police Department announced today that it was awarded accreditation from the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Facebook: "CALEA accreditation means the Las Cruces Police Department has demonstrated that it has comprehensive policies in place and approved practices that support transparent and accountable operations...."

KTSM: "LCPD joins the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, Farmington Police Department, Los Alamos County Police Department and New Mexico State Police as the only CALEA-accredited law enforcement agencies in New Mexico."

Note that Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO) fully encrypted all radio communications when it migrated to DTRS a couple of years ago. So, for anyone wondering: The phrase "transparent and accountable operations" does not imply unencrypted radio dispatch. On the other hand, dispatch for at least one of the other agencies (NMSP) is currently unencrypted.

Construction of the county's new Office of Emergency Management facility, near the NMSU Golf Course, is reportedly near completion.

The building will also provide a backup dispatch center for the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority, which handles emergency communications for agencies in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.

Lopez said MVRDA recently approved new dispatcher consoles for the facility.

“MVRDA is looking forward to having a full backup dispatch center,” Lopez told commissioners.

The center will also be used for dispatcher training. Lopez said as many as 10 dispatchers will be able to train simultaneously on live consoles.

“They will be conducting their training from now on in that facility,” he said. “So they can actually have 10 dispatchers going through training simultaneously, all live on the consoles.”

Lopez called the facility “a great partnership” between the county and MVRDA....
