Hi Angie,
The antenna that comes with any scanner is usually an "all-band" type which is never "real good" at any band, but is "ok" at getting you started.
If you are into air scanning, I would suggest a model such as the Diamond RH77CA, or if you will be scanning 800mhz frequencies, then the Radio Shack 20-283 should suit you nicely.

Good luck!

what antenna?

Hi angie,
what antenna to use,is that what you're asking?
It all depends on what you would like to hear. there are services on all bands and
certain bands work well with different antennas. Hope you enjoy the hobby!!
Good luck!

Well, I don't know what the stock antenna on the Pro-528 is. But I've bought and tried several different antennae with my Pro-97. I really liked the 800 MHz duckie for listening to two local law enforcement agencies. But I also needed to get some VHF signals in the 155.0 to 174.0 range. RadioShack's 9-inch duckie does a little bit better job, there.

I also have a glass mount scanner antenna, which does well across all the bands, and a mag mount, which does just as well but doesn't look as good while doing it.

I built an outdoor antenna on Saturday.

Don't be afraid to experiment.

I dont even no what MHz and VHF is and bands.
What i think is I will just read read n read up about the scanners before I get an antannae.
I dont even understand trunking yet.I do have my local Police and Fire and some other towns around me it on it.
I just remember my Nanas old scanners with the crystals, hahaha.

Thanhs guy,appreciate it!!!!!

The thing to remember is: Higher frequencies use smaller antennas and can 'cut through' trees and structures more than lower frequencies, but have shorter total distances.

If you're in a very urban area, most of the stuff you will get will be around 800 mhz (the highest frequencies commonly used for public service radios)

http://radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=1224 is a permanent link to the Plymouth County, MA frequency pages on RadioReference. (Bookmark this page if you haven't already - you will need it every day, just about).

Judging from what's listed, most of the stuff in your area is UHF (450 mhz). However, it appears as though you're reasonably close to Boston, and major cities almost always have extensive 800 mhz networks. Grab the Radio Shack "800 mhz rubber duck" and see if that improves your UHF and 800 reception. If you still want more, you can start thinking about putting up an outside antenna.

We all started somehow. Asking questions is how I learned everything I know now. To start answering some of your questions. MHz is the "measurement" of a radio wave from one peak to another. Think of it as a wave on the ocean. The distance from a peak of one wave to the peak of another would be a megahert(s) or MHz. A band is a bunch of frequencies. HF (High-Frequency) VHF (Very-High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) are all different bands. Within those bands there are smaller bands that contain frequencies. I guess you could say it's kind of like building blocks. If anyone has a better way to explain this, feel free to speak up! Hope this helps you out, and welcome to the world of scanning! Remeber, Ask, Ask, Ask!

Shy girls don't post a picture of themselves on the internet to a bunch of people they don't know

Anyway, the radio shack 800mhz antenna works really well on the 800's and is also a pretty decent all around antenna.

The Pro-528's bang for the buck has brought quite a few newbies (including me) into scanning. That could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you feel about the forum getting questions from people that don't know what they are talking about (me again).

I'm looking to upgrade from the stock antenna and am looking at the RS 20-034. Most of the local agencies are between 150-170 mhz. and a few are at 460mhz. Nothing at 800.

Are there any other recommendations in the $20 range?

A lot of people like the Diamond RH77CA ( http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/scanants/2368.html ). Mine will arrive tomorrow so I can't personally recommend it yet. See thread: http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14783

The RS 20-034 should work well also but I've never used it. I have an RS 20-006 telescoping model that works pretty good for the frequency range you mentioned as well.

Hi Angie,

I noticed that you like a lot of newbies ask before reading. Many of your questions have been asked many times by many people so yours have already been answered many times over. You'll find pretty much all you want to know for now right here on these and other forums. Stick around for a while, this one is about the biggest and the best, besides, you've already made lots of friends. If you don't find what you're looking for or become confused we'll straighten it right out for you, ask away.

"I do have lots of questions, but I just dont want to look like a big ole dummy."

We all start out as big ole dummies, welcome to The Big Dummy Club. Ah, that brings back memories of good times on CB and good friends, a guy named Glen in particular who started The Big Dummy Club.

"And i am very shy...."

Yeah, RIGHT! (;->) Is that why you're hiding that pretty face behind that green thing?

"f you met me in person you would see i am very shy till I get to no ya."

At the dance clubs I was the classic wall flower. It didn't take long to discover girls like wall flowers but that's a long story.

"Im just all psyched up about my new scanner,i just love getting new toys..."

Me too but I'm a DOM and you're too cute.

So welcome my friend to the show that never ends (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and you'll find out a scanner and this web site are like that. Oh, DOM = dirty old man. (;->)
