I just got a PRO-164, and am wondering with all of the re-banding that is happening, do I NEED the software? I'm not above programming it by the keypad, so my question is strictly relative to any re-banding issues. I've read somewhere that I may need to set up some kind of "re-banding tables", or something to that effect.

If there is any way for me to do this right now, without having to go out and buy cable/software, I'm all for it. I would greatly appreciate any/all advice.

Thanks!

If you're trying to program a Motorola trunked system that has been rebanded and using the rebanded tables, yes, you need software to set those tables. It is not possible to set those tables in the scanner itself.

OK, would you be able to walk me through in in short, "bullet-style" steps? This re-banding stuff has got me a bit confused.

Also, where can I get the software to do this? Any chance on getting freeware? Is starrsoft.com or scancat.com any good for software? Would WIN97 work on the PRO-164? I looked at the starrsoft site, and I think it is, but before I go downloading software, I'd like to be sure.

Thanks!

Win97 is the programming software for the pro-164. IMO using the software makes it 100X easier to program the new scanners. Its well worth the small fee for it.

Software makes it easier to program, but one thing you must do, and I tell this to everyone who buys a scanner, learn the scanner. If your out on the road and going to somewhere new to you and you have some data to program in frequencies, learn how to program your scanner by yourself. You should be able to program on the fly because if you can't, you will miss out on what's out there. Win97 is the smart choice in programming.

I know, I've had the PRO-97 for a few years, and as far as I can see the PRO-164 is a PRO-97 on 'rroids. I've always programmed my scanners via the keypad, so using WIN97 will be a treat. Thank you everyone for your advice! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I'll check in after I'm done programming it and let you know how it went.

I use ARC 300 from Butel. But in the end the software you get is what works best for you. Most of them offer a free 30 day trial so you can see which is best for you. Also if you aren't a premium member of RR, join up as it is money well spent.

If you'll follow the link in Mike's signature, you can download his PSRedit300 software. It's easy to use, and will program the Pro-163, Pro-164, PSR300, PSR400 as well as some other radios.

It's Programmed!!!

OK, well after monkeying around with the drivers for the programming cable, and then downloading the programming software, I've finally got this scanner programmed! Once I got everything loaded onto my PC, the actual programming of the scanner was very easy. I first tried ARC300, which didn't work all that well. Then I went to WIN97, and voila!

A big "Thank You" to those that responded to my post. I really appreciate it!
