Do I need to upgrade scanner for NYC?

It's hard to scan NYPD because there is so much activity on every channel. Your best bet would probably be to put the NYPD frequencies for each borough in a separate bank and then narrow your scanning to a specific borough. I usually end up just holding on a specific precinct - my favorite being BK 73/75 (476.9875).
Citywide channels announce local incidents almost in realtime as it’s happening so when I hear something on citywide I quickly switch to that precinct and still catch most of the incidents almost from the beginning. Last night’s double shooting in Queens and then in Brooklyn I caught through citywide channels first.

Unless you’re listening in the wee hours of the mornings, there’s a decent delay from when incidents get broadcasted on citywide. Best method I find is if you have multiple scanners is to set them up by boroughs and scan and then have a another one parked on sod. I used to be able to do this but now I get a headache listening to just one NYPD frequency lol
