Do I really need to purchase the Upgrades ?

I am going to buy another Uniden SDS-200 scanner in the near future. I live 20 miles north of Peoria, IL. My question is: do I really need to buy all of the upgrades. (DMR, NXDN, ProVoice). I have to have DMR, but what about the rest? Most of the rail traffic can be heard without "NXDN. What about the ProVoice, what departments are using that, in the area? Thank you for your time. 1% of people need provoice.

If you think you'll want to listen to any frequencies OR trunked systems that are NXDN or DMR in your area, then you'll need to buy them.

If you want to just start with one, probably get the DMR first.

I'm about 20 minutes north of you in Henry. My 3 996P2's have the DMR to listen to Marshall, Putnam, and LaSalle counties. That's all I have close by. There may be some NXDN in the Peoria area. I haven't looked. I don't know of any Pro-Voice in the area.

Purchase the scanner without the upgrades. It is less expensive to upgrade the scanner yourself than to have a dealer do it. The upgrades already reside in the scanner firmware. You just need to log into my.uniden.com to purchase the keys to enable the upgrades.

What about the ProVoice

If you have no intentions on ever monitoring any of the systems below then don't bother with ProVoice. PV has been long EOL'ed by now and I'm sure more than one of the systems below are due for future replacement (I can speak for sure for Lebanon County, PA with regards to that fact) If I were to choose one out of the 3 I'd go with DMR, it's the most widely used by far out of the 3 paid modes
