Do the LEO's in your county act like 3 yr olds, too?

I was listening to the CHP chasing a dump truck near my town last night. The Sheriff joined the chase (it was in the back country) and got all pissy because the CHP didn't want to switch to their channel. CHP is crying back about how "this is OUR pursuit, if they want in they have to be on OUR freqs! and blah blah blah"

Then later, one of the butt hurt Sheriff's took the lead from the CHP and of course he cried to dispatch about how "the SO just passed me with out asking to take the lead, whaaa"

Anyone else hear childish antics like this?

I won't comment about how they took like 20 minutes to stop this guy in the dump truck... :D

Sounds like their frustration was not being able to talk with each other. Normally multi-agency pursuits in that area are patched on LE South Command

No, it was where they wanted to talk. The SO wanted to bust in to the pursuit and use their own freqs (their jurisdiction) and the CHP are like "no way biatch, use ours, we started it!" :finger:

That sounds odd. In our area a patch is set-up almost immediately, similar to what brandon said.

Maybe that wasn't an option, or maybe the CHP dispatcher was asleep at the switch.

They were on LE East TAC. The CHP doesn't usually like other agencies mixing in with them on pursuits.

Sounds like there is some younger officers involved. For most places it is proper procedure to Ask for Permission to overtake another emergency vehicle.

That doesn't exactly sound like the safest practice. You never know if the guy in the lead is hanging back for a reason.

Not to mention it's unsafe for all of the CHP units to have to switch over to another channel (in this case, the SO's channel). If there's only one SO unit but multiple CHP units, it would make more sense to have that ONE SO unit to switch to a new channel when he/she joins pursuit. It's dangerous to have multiple units -- which also includes the lead unit -- to have to fumble around with radios and switches and that forces them to take their attention away from the pursuit, just to have to switch over to a new channel.

The Iowa State Patrol is now experimenting with voice-activated radios, lights, and sirens to avoid the hassle of having to fumble around during a pursuit or traffic stop just for this reason.

Today there was a pursuit down the I5 from OC. CHP was following and astrea was on the way. Everyone was on the MA channel. I think it was No. TAC 1.

A lot of local PD's and SO's always have problem CHP pursuits. I have heard some places they tell CHP once it is off the freeway it is ours and we do not need you thank you very much. I have heard that about it in Northern California and in So Cal too. I guess some just don't want to share.

As another user pointed out, the CHP is very possessive when they have a pursuit. They usually don't want other agencies interfering. I heard a CHP pursuit many months ago that went into downtown San Diego. SDPD got involved because it was on city streets. I don't remember if CHP asked for their help (I doubt it) but I think they were just notifying SDPD that they were on the streets. The pursued vehicle was driving erratically and at unsafe speeds, and as usual, a supervisor ordered all SDPD units to terminate the pursuit. He tried to carry over that order to the pursuing CHP units via the dispatchers(because it takes an act of GOD sometimes to get CHP Orange to patch with other agencies) and CHP basically gave them the finger and said they were NOT terminating. There was a back and forth several times between the SDPD dispatcher (with relayed messages from CHP) and the supervisor on the street about the termination order. It was rather comical in that in NO WAY IN HELL was CHP going to terminate on the order of the PD sargeant. Luckily, the fleeing vehicle was disabled in a short period of time and the pursuit came to an end. I would have loved to see the exchange on the streets between the CHP guys and the SDPD supervisor after that.

Nothing like cooperation between LE agencies

Around here when there is a pursuit or other incident, the initial units involved stay on their main channel and the dispatcher patches it to a mutual aid talkgroup called LTAC-1. Other agencies responding then switch to LTAC-1. They then work together to get the job done rather than bickering like kids about it.

The cooperation between agencies isn't always as rosey and nice as they'd like the public to believe. I've sat at many a meeting to discuss interop with multiple agencies, and watched the fur fly. And me, being the dumb, lowly radio engineer dragged kicking into these meetings, usually managed to end it by asking them to hold while I go for some popcorn.

Yes there have been times where they act childish. While it would be hard to endorse such behavior on a regular basis, I'm willing to give Cops slack since they have to play the game of protecting the public and catch the crooks often times to be second guessed by cop haters.
Listen to school bus drivers if you want to hear 5 year olds in the bodies of adults.

Around here, the Constables (mainly precinct 4) won't even pursue a vehicle. Say if the city of Houston gets in a pursuit, Harris County SO won't touch it most of the time no matter where it goes. If TX DPS gets into a pursuit unless they ask Harris County SO for back up, Harris County won't let their own officers pursue. It's all a bunch of bull crap politics.

Something tells me there is more to this story than we know. I would think there has to be a prior incident of some significance that has caused this rift. My guess would be that someone in upper management on one side or both has dug in their heals for some reason. In my experience people in the field often make things work in spite of management. Of course this could be my "worked as a field supervisor most of my career" bias.

I don't quite follow the discussion of the various radio channels since my experience is limited strictly to the CHP being on low band and all the local jurisdictions being on VHF-High. Does the CHP actually have RCC 800 MHz radios in their units as well as the standard low band? Are we talking about low band to RCC trunked patches?

The relationship between the CHP and other jurisdictions in my rural area is far better than what is described here. Everyone backs each other up, a country deputy may make a traffic stop and be backed up by the CHP without a specific request, with a Forest Service law enforcement officer pulling in when things start sounding a bit dicey over the air. Every officer has such a large area to cover that none of the agencies can afford to distance themselves from each other.

When a pursuit leaves a town or gets out onto a main highway the CHP takes over, no questions asked. They have the ability to carry it futher than anyone else and I believe are the only ones in the two county region I live in that possess the spike strips. The CHP is well respected here, except, of course, for chronic law breakers and the hard of hearing (their eardrums are blocked by the lining of their colons).

Actually Smokey there is. The pursuit began with CHP in the back country and they requested assistance probably as there wasn't any other CHP close at the time. When SDSO got involved, the truck driver rammed the SDSO vehicle.
Generally speaking the agencies get along fine, and CHP will always offer to take over a pursuit on the highways, but from what I hear, that is up to the initiating agency.
In this case, the pursuit was a CHP pursuit from the start and it got personal for the SDSO when one of their vehicles was rammed.
I don't know what the big ordeal was other than egos. Both agencies work off of the same radio system. In the eastern SD county the CHP uses the county RCS so changing to a common talkgroup shouldn't have been an issue.

sounds like they all need to get a long and share like good little boys! :D

they need to work as a team, they are in the business to protect, and serve and all that good stuff, but how are they to do that if they argue with each other (being on the same side as one another) instead of ctaching the real bad guy?
