does a scanner usually leave the house with you?

No I don't take it with me in the car. Florida has strict laws against it. I'm not motivated enough to get my ham license just so I can carry a scanner in the car. When I take long trips and the states allow it I'll take my scanners. Chuck.

...if I want to go the airport and watch planes in the obsersation lot afterwards, I'm all set.

I only take my PRO-97 into the field when I'm visiting local airports. Otherwise, it sits on my nightstand and only gets turned on if I hear sirens in the neighborhood.

I take mine virtually everywhere. It sits in the built-in pouch of the driver's door. I don't always listen, it it's there if I want it.

If I can't have base station quality, I'd rather have nothing at all.
I feel the same way. I used to carry a handheld and spare Eneloops with me everywhere, but I got tired of that recently. Between the horrible 800 MHz reception around cell towers, almost non-existent lowband reception (CHP), and having to hide the thing all the time so the druggies and other paranoid types wouldn't call me "po-leeece", it became more of a bother than it was worth. Besides, I'd rather use my 396 as a digital base so I don't have to spend another $500 on another digital scanner when my local trunking system finally goes all-digital.

I bring a handheld scanner and an amateur HT with me where ever I go. I've been a scanning enthusiast for over 20 years, and an Amateur Radio Operator for over 15 years, and I've become increasingly enamored with 2-way communications in that time. Besides, being an EMT-Paramedic for 20 years, I've grown accustomed to "being in the know" in terms of public safety. As others have stated, I actually do feel "naked" if I leave the house without my radio(s)...I'm relieved to read that I'm not the only one who's like that. ;)

I don't carry a scanner with me out of the car...just my radio. I'm usually just interested in our county's traffic. I have a mobile with the same set up as my portable radio along with a scanner (all counties) in my car.

You bet! :) I take my vx-6r to work with me almost every day,as I work across the road from our airport. Sometimes my kenwood TK 353 goes with as well.

Moving a portable from home to car and back is something I have done off and on for many years. Typically I bring one. At times I might bring one into 'the field'- Airshows, major events (World Series in town, Presidential visit, etc). That brings up one of the few things I don't like about my new HomePatrol-1. The form factor for carrying it around isn't too great. The form factor for mounting to a windshield like a GPS is great. Gotta take the good with the bad I guess.

I have scanners going 24/7 365, including when I am out of the house or shop. Even have one when I am on the rider cutting the grass, out off roading somewhere or on trips. Even had em stashed out of view at weddings and funerals!
The best part is a friend who's a single mom with 5 of her 7 kids still at home and when she works I take 4 of her daughters to school and pick them up. All the girls but one hate the scanners until something big or funny happens. This morning not far from their school there was a house fire and the girls all knew what was going on before anyone at school.
Depending on which vehicle I drive it has either a 996XT or 996T in it plus one or two portables that go everywhere I go. And if I am on a job a third portable goes.

Not often, though I've got two. When I go on road trips, I bring along my PSR 500 so I can keep tabs on what's going on with HP and the Department of Transportation via the statewide P25 system, particularly in bad weather (which is common here on the high plains during winter). Sometimes, around town, if bored and have nothing better to do, I'll throw either the PSR 500 in to go hunting for new frequencies with Spectrum Sweeper, or grab my ancient-but-still-going-strong Uniden BC80XLT to listen to public works and/or local LEO/fire traffic while I'm puttering around town. Not sure how long that will last though, since they've also got their P25 talkgroups up and running, but are still simulcasting on their old conventional frequencies.

I've thought about putting up a streaming scanner here in town so I can listen while at work, but my internet access isn't on all the time at home. I used to do it when I was living with the ex, but that was a year and a half ago. When the internet situation improves, I may reconsider that. Streaming would work best for me, since I'm often in places that have either a lot of interference and intermod, or in the basement of a building on campus where reception is dreadful.

I have at least 2 scanners with me at all times. I have a pro-106 and a pro-196. On road trips I take my pro-164 with me. It drives my wife nuts because I put at least 2 windshield holders in her car and the circles drives her nuts.

As long as you don't make it obvious, it's extremely rare you will get caught with it.

I don't usually take my 396XT out of the house since I have a 996T in my truck!

My 163 sits on the dash of my truck. the 164 has a hanger from the air vent, and the old 91 still goes along sometimes... and Buddy Glock rides under the jump seat..the 163 and Buddy go with me everywhere.

allways, get tired of the"cat in the tree" calls "fire dept." calls but oh well.good to listen before you head out to make sure it's safe.always have at least one on the road for the same reason. bay area to Tahoe where i go, A Sportcat180 and a BC346XT giving me the news. I remember the 70's when dad had a Radio Shack radio that would get the local LEO and we would ride our bikes to the scene. good times!

Always

I almost never leave the house with out one. I have one in my car so even if I don't bring a hand-held, I can still listen. I am involved with the Sheriff's Dept. here and am a stock photographer so it also goes along with my job.

Some guys have the reoccurring nightmare of being somewhere in public and looking down and seeing that they have no pants on.

I have the same dream, only I look down at my belt and realize I've left my scanner at home instead.

If I'm awake, it's with me
