does a scanner usually leave the house with you?

I just have one scanner, a handheld 396XT. I take it to work everyday. I work in a newsroom and we have two XTL2500 radios for scanning but they are poorly programmed so it's quite handy to have one that works properly.

I also have a BCD396XT. It goes from the house to the truck, from the truck to my job, and back again. I take it everywhere. When I need to be incognito, I put it in a small backpack and listen to it with ear-buds. People don't even give me a second look. With today's iPod obsession, everyone has ear-buds in their ears. And when I'm asleep it sits in SAME alert mode.

So no if I can't take it with me. I don't go.and at work my boss calls me asking what going on. And my girlfriend love it.

I tend to keep my ht in the car so I have it when I need it. I have a dual band Yeasu 7800 in the car and when there is no one to talk to I will listen to the local LEO's. Never know when you will be near the DUI check point, or other hazards that need to be avoided.

XTL2500 makes for an expensive scanner, albeit a front-end that will be hard to overload. They could buy a few PSR-600s for that price, with programming software and subscription here.

I never go ANYWHERE without mine. I even had a custom made pocket put on my leather jacket so it's always at my side. Maybe not always on, but if I hear sirens or an explosion I'm ussualy only a second away from knowing whats up. The only problem I ever run into is being in an un expected area that I don't have programmed.

I am actualy about to setup a home station with 3 base scanners hooked into my PC and an external 4tb hard drive. I'm going to start recording my locals county and state district for records purposes.....more like because I'm a nerd

Sounds like me. Ever since I started my feed on here, I recorded my local county's fire and sheriff traffic. It's nice knowing I can go back and listen to any day and any time of that day. It's also very nice to re-listen to what happened while we were all sleeping at night. Lots of crazy stuff goes on within those 8 hours of sleep we get.

My desktops stay at home, and my BCD396XT stays at the office. I always have my Pro-137 is however always in the car, perfect for rail, aero and marine traffic, which around here is pretty busy.

I often carry my main portable (currently Yaesu VX-7R) with me wherever I go. If I don't have that with me then there is a Yaesu FT-8800 mounted in the car.

I have several scanners in the house, 3 scanners in the vehicle and 2 handhelds for when I go out for any length of time. I usually take a handheld with me if I am out for a long time or if there is an event (weather, public safety) going on.

2 house (on 24/7/365, they last longer that way), 3 vehicle, no handhelds (used to, years ago, but health issues.....).

No. I don't see the need for having one while making quick trips around the hood. Even if I did take a HH with me, I leave it in the car. Seems like too much work...one hand holding the HH, the other pushing the grocery cart.....one hand holding the HH, the other carrying a 2-4......

My FT7900 and FT60 both have VHF, UHF and aircraft frequencies in them in their own banks. I sometimes take my BC246T with me to listen to trunks and I am awaiting my mobile mounts for my HP1. I have NMO mounts for scanner antennae on both my vehicles.

I have my 396 in my work ute, it lives in there for whenever it is needed, leaves me a digital short in the house which can be a pain at times.

I have the 996XT, so where I take it is limited...but if it is more than just a trip up to the grocery store, I definitely bring it. I was thinking of buying the 396XT now because I am having withdrawals whenever I walk around places...What is the reception of the 396XT in comparison to the 996XT? I'm really thinking about it, but it is another $500 bucks that I'm gonna have to work all summer for. You think its worth it?
