I have owned RS scanners since the first 4 crystal model, and I don't know of RS every having their own factories. Their best amateur radio series, the HTX 202 and 404 were based on designs purchased from Icom and built in Korea. Try to find a computer that is actually built by the company whose name is on the front.

That depends on your definition of "built by"? Make all the parts? GM doesn't make all the parts that go into a GM car. But some computer companies actually build the computers they sell. (For instance, some Taiwanese companies make motherboards and cards, and use the ones they make in their own computers.)

Does any company actually make everything in what they sell? I don't think any company since the beginning of the 20th century has. Even Ford bought components for the Model A from other companies.

I am not aware of any scanner every actually made by a Radio Shack (or Tandy) factory. However, they have typically been spec'd by RadioShack so as to be differentiated from non-RS branded scanners.

Going back to the Realistic and Archer days, Radio Shack had electronic equipment OEM'ed to their sepc's. Many times one could see the PC boards with the Cobra, or Uniden labels or layouts inside. They did do in house repair with repair centers across the country and of course in Texas, alas now they do things the Cell Phone Way (sarcasm intended to the last statement).

Actually, cell phone providers now do it the Radio Shack way, put their labels on parts made by other manufactures.

Radio Shack still has service facilities around the country and even does repair work for other companies.

Actually Tandy/Radio Shack did have a computer manufacturing plant in Fort Worth in the 80s early 90s.

I remember when Radio Shack had the Realistic Scanners they were custom made in Japan for Radio Shack and they were good ones too like the Pro 7A 7B VHF Hi Pro 77 VHF Hi/Lo. They were crystal controlled.

I have two Radio Shack scanners, a pro 34, and a pro 60; both of which were made by someone else..
and built to RS specs. Now i wouldn't send a thing to RS for repair, Doubt they could put batteries in a flashlite with out messing it up... They should just call it the Shack, and leave the Radio off completely..

That's been the word I've heard for a long time now. They've successfully dwindled down their scanner selection over the years to only include a select few at this point anyway so it won't be long before they're completely gone from the store.

Damn, The Shack used to be a really fun place to visit back in the 1970's. I could hang out in one a long time playing with the newest stuff back then. I guess that's progress :(

My first job in the industry was as a line repair technician at Tandy Home Computers, where the Color Computer was made. Worked 2nd shift, 4pm-midnight, and the two other techs and myself plus one security guard had the entire facility to ourselves. I actually left that job because I could make more money working at Six Flags...

Have been hearing that rumor for 10 years and will probably be hearing it for the next 10 years. Don't bet on it being true.

While not all are available in all stores, does this list look like a select few?
