Does RTL SDR V4 Work With SDRTrunk?

I just received a new RTL SDR V4 after a lengthy backorder wait. I’m yet to set it up with SDR# or SDRTrunk as I understand that a different driver than previous versions needs to be installed to get the dongle to work properly. Has anyone tried the V4 with SDRTrunk? If the new driver is installed will the older dongles like V3 & previous models work with it?

Yes. 0.6.0 Beta 5 does. And Beta 5 apparently works fine with V4 and other (like V3) dongles mixed in, where previous betas that originally added support for V4 did not.

I can't answer your question about what other drivers (if any) may be needed. I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

I’m very grateful for the information. I mainly bought the V4 for the fact that they added HF without using an additional converter but it will also be useful as an addition for my trunking setup

Isn't there a high risk involved when getting a V4 when it will only be produced during one year? Not many will have that V4 model which means that support in different programs may be lacking both now and in the future.

  • The V4 is a Limited Edition Design. The R828D tuner chip is completely out of production now and the number of units we can produce is limited by the number of chips held by our contract manufacturer in China. They have indicated that there should be enough stockpile for about a years worth of production.

High risk? No, not at all. Both DSD+ and SDRTrunk already support it, and Rick mentioned adding support for it in Unitrunker 2.1

I think their going to be around for sometime & definitely worth the $35 price tag for such a remarkable device. In the past I’ve spent over $500 for scanners that only lasted a couple of years before a new system was introduced rendering the radio next to useless. Very pleased with the performance of the V4 so far!

I've been using Nooelec RTL-SDR v5 with no issues with SDRTrunk, HDSRD and Unitrunker.
Not apples to apples. Nooelec v5 is more like rtl blog v3. rtl blog v4, is a different tuner chip. R860 [R820T on new dies] in Nooelec v5, and R828D in the rtl blog v4. Very similar, but drivers seem to be the headache. I have many R820Ts and R860s, but zero R828Ds, yet.

I am running it with v0.6.0-beta-5 on a very busy P25 system. However it does not work as well as with the V3 dongles. Decoded audio is not as clear for some reason. Did anyone need to make any changes to support the V4 other than updated the version of sdrtrunk?

I updated to JMBE 1.0.9 and that seemed to help a bit.

I believe I finally figured it out. I had to go into the tuner tab on sdrtrunk and set the Master Gain Control to automatic for each tuner. Might not be an issue if the trunked system you are listening to has a strong signal. But for me it made the difference.

Absolute newby at SDR's and I bought a NESDR SMArTee v2 thinking it would do everything!
Can this dongle be used for P25 trunking in NSW Oz? I've had no luck so far, but then again, I'm new at all this SDR'ing.
