Just wanted to call this out, since I got burned by it. It was my fault, but I'm still mystified there hasn't been any obvious outcry about this from the tech community.

The RTX 5060 chipset/cards only support PCIe @ 8x bandwidth. It's a physical limitation. A way to sell GPUs to non-tech people I suppose.

I have an old RTX 3060 card which runs at PCIe @ 16x bandwidth, so it's a not some mystical engineering problem -- it's all about the mighty dollar.

So as a PSA, don't buy any computer with a NVIDIA 5060 card or chipset. You're effectively getting half a proper GPU. You don't need to understand the tech reasons, but it's like buying the same size car but this model's engine is running at half the horsepower.

You do realize that your chief complaint is around the PCIe bus. The 3060 is PCIe x16 (Gen 4) (32 GT/s) where the 5060 is PCIe x8 (Gen 5) (32 GT/s), right? In otherwords it would be pointless for me to put a 5060 into my desktop since the mobo only supports PCIe Gen 4 because the physical video card only supports x8. That would be on me though for not knowing my PC.

In my 35+ years of selling, building, upgrading computers I have found that most people mistake model numbers of a higher designation number to be more advanced than a model with a lower number.

Folks have to do their due diligence on CPUs and GPUs to understand exactly what each model number is capable of and where it falls in the hierarchy of high-end to entry level equipment.

A simple search is all it takes to get a hierarchy chart.

No it's about Nvidia making a silly, comprimise GPU design that runs at half-speed!

I built a new Gen 5 system recently and couldn't figure out why the 5060 Ti was only running at x8 bandwidth. It never occured to me that my 5060 GPU (which I purchased 12/2025) would be capped at x8 bandwidth.

Why bother making a GPU that supports PCIe if it isn't going to take maxmium benefit of the bus?? Stupid marketing ploy.

Yes, I am pissed because (at that time) I could have purchased the 5070 Ti for a reasonable price. Now it's $1300 + tax. Grrr.

The RTX 5060 is not a top gpu, it is ranked 36th in the line of hierarchy for Nvidia gpus and sells for $299 MSRP, although sell for more online.
Where have you been? None of the RTX 5xxx series GPUs have sold for anywhere near that price. And yes it is a top GPU. Nvidia RTX 5060 is a Tier 1 chipset.

BTW, if you think this is about price/performance, then you're really missing my point.

Not going to argue, but if you google it, the RTX5060 is considered MID Tier, and yes I know with the current world situation MSRP doesn't mean a thing, that's why I said they were more online.

I think you failed to check into the performance of the chip and specs before you got it, so now you are trying to blame Nvidia for your mistake.

Just my opinion, I'm done.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I'm just ranting, and I want people to understand my point. If you don't agree that's fine.

Just seems borderline deceitful that anyone design a PCIe Gen 5 graphics card to run at x8 speed.

BTW, here's what I'm talking about: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/asu...ci-express-5-0-graphics-card-black/JJGHGYVFHK

I don't see anything on there saying it's limited to Gen 5 PCIe x8...

Just saying... marketing voodoo strikes again. :devilish:

In reality, PCIe 5 x8 isn't limiting that card. Having x16 electrically available on the card won't help for the same reasons an ISA 10/100 card didn't benefit in performance by moving to PCI. It's like having 4 lanes of travel instead of 2 when you're the only one on the road.

I know it can be upsetting, but unless you're seeing something others aren't, enjoy the card.

here is the AI's answer:

Verification: RTX 5060 PCIe x8

The technical fact is true: the RTX 5060 (and RTX 5060 Ti) uses a PCIe 5.0 x8 interface, not x16. This is confirmed by NVIDIA, board partners (MSI, PNY, ASUS…), and reviews (Digital Foundry, TechSpot). The RTX 3060, by contrast, operates at PCIe 4.0 x16.

However, the interpretation is misleading on several points:

  1. It's not a "physical limitation" — it's a design choice by NVIDIA to cut costs (fewer PCB traces, simpler connector). The card still plugs into a standard x16 slot; it's simply wired to 8 lanes.
  2. The real-world impact is minimal on modern systems:
    • PCIe 5.0 x8 → ~31.5 GB/s (plenty)
    • PCIe 4.0 x8 → ~15.8 GB/s (fine)
    • PCIe 3.0 x8 → ~7.9 GB/s → that's a genuine bottleneck, especially with 8 GB of VRAM.
TechSpot's tests show noticeable losses only on PCIe 3.0. On PCIe 4.0/5.0, the difference is negligible.
  3. This isn't new: the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti were already x8. It's a common practice on mid-range GPUs.
  4. The "don't buy it" advice is excessive: if your motherboard is PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 (the case for virtually all recent systems), the RTX 5060 runs at full capacity. The only real risk is installing it on an older PCIe 3.0 system.
In short: the fact is true, but the "half performance" and "scam on newcomers" conclusion is an overinterpretation. It's a standard cost/performance trade-off on the mid-range segment, with no measurable impact on a modern system.
