The boys, who were not identified, were airlifted to Gunnison Valley Hospital at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. (actually ground transported to GVH and flown to St Marys)
Three boys were playing along the irrigation ditch, filled with water, just east of Colorado Highway 135 two of them accidentally fell into the swift-moving ditch water.
The third boy ran for help just before 7 p.m. Both children were recovered from separate locations along the ditch.

All of the boys were from different families in the same neighborhood, according to the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies estimated the ditch water was running around 60 cu. ft. per second.

Child dies after falling in ditch

One of two 4-year-old boys pulled out of an irrigation ditch Wednesday has died, Gunnison County officials say.

The neighborhood friends fell into the ditch, which is about three feet deep, while playing with an 8-year-old boy around 7 p.m., said Undersheriff Rick Besecker.

The boy died at the Gunnison Valley Hospital this morning, Besecker said.

"The accessibility is the dangerous part of the irrigation ditch," Besecker said.

The ditch, which runs through the Wumble Tracks subdivision about eight miles north of Gunnison, is not fenced in, he said.

The 8-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, ran to his house after his younger friends fell into the water and told his parents about the accident.

The two boys were discovered at different locations in the water, Besecker said.

The ditch, which is eight to 10 feet wide, is owned by area ranchers who water hay fields with the water that comes from the Gunnison River, he said.
