:)

I have noticed during the last couple of weeks that when moving around in a forum post, it seems s-l-o-w.

I am on Bell South DSL and other sites download in a flash.

Has something happened to slow this site down???

Just curious.

Best Regards,
Julian

Bear with us... the site is busy. We see over 15 Million hits a month....

A lot of the problem can be attibuted to crawlers of the site. For those of you that are choosing to crawl the entire site for offline access, I'll be hunting you down--- be forewarned, crawling the site will get you banned..

In addition, there are all kinds of companies that wanna get on the google bandwagon, and as such crawl the piss out of sites all the time, disregarding robots.txt etc.

We've got some good performance enhancements coming....so stay tuned... and keep those donations coming.

Crawlers (aka spiders) are [usually automated] systems that grab every web page a server can deliver. They'll start at the root of a site (e.g. www.radioreference.com) and will hit every link they see in the received HTML. Doing this recursively, they can a) download an entire site's data and b) bring the site's server(s) to its knees.

This is what ROBOTS.TXT files are for. To keep such crawlers from hitting specific trees in the site's hierarchy.

RR.com is also subject to another kind of attack: hitting the RR database via the "web services" API, enumerating the enitre trunked system database via XML. Fortunately, such access requires "contributing" membership, and Lindsay can hunt you down and kick your dog.

I was going to mention this too. I've noticed in the last couple of weeks that it takes a longer than normal period of time going from reading to posting mode and in some cases from thread to thread.

Good luck on resolving the issues Lindsey...

Not only was the site slow but I had considerable navigation problems. Let's see how this new stuff works, so far, so good.
