Two small children were killed and their mother was in critical condition after they were mowed down by a hit-and-run driver late Friday in downtown Denver.
The children, a boy and girl, were taken to Children's Hospital and Denver Health Medical Center, where they died. The youngsters' mother and father, who also was injured, were at Denver Health. The father's injuries did not appear to be as grave, witnesses said.
Police said the children were about 2 and 4 years old, with the girl being the elder.
Detectives said they found a red pickup truck in Westminster that was involved in the hit-and- run, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Police were searching for two men, who may have changed vehicles and are now riding in a maroon 1966 Ford Mustang with Colorado license plates 974-OSR.
The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. as the parents were pushing a stroller across Arapahoe Street at 15th Street in front of La Fondue and Gallagher's Steak House restaurants, police and witnesses said.
A mangled baby stroller and children's shoes still littered the scene an hour later.
Detectives got a major break in their investigation when they found the Colorado license plate number of the truck - 565 JZE. A witness said the license plate fell from the pickup after it slammed into the victims.
Alice Maynard, of Evergreen, said she was putting her four children inside her sport utility vehicle at a valet stop in front of Gallagher's when she saw the family crossing the street on a green light and the truck racing southbound on Arapahoe.
"It was doing about 50 mph," said Maynard. "He didn't even brake. He didn't even slow down. They were walking on green, and he ran through a red light. I don't think he knew he even hit this family."
