DPS Region 4 APCO P25 Digital Info

I understand the DPS has gone APCO P25 digital in the Abilene Midland area. Can someone tell me what the P25 digital code or GID they are now using so I can hear them on my P25 radio?

Just put your radio in "monitor" mode. This will open the squelch to any P25 signal (if you have the DSQ on) - otherwise it will let any analog signals in also. I have heard there is a "catch all" NAC that will work, some say 293 (but I don't think so) - I have heard one like 3F0 or something like that too, but I don't know. If anyone does know it, please let us know!

Trying to Learn/DPS Apco-25

So is the code your looking for like a PL Tone/DPL Tone or is it someting new?

Also, I thought you could hear the new digital stuff on just about any radio/scanner so long as you just enter in the frequency and it is P25 capable, etc?

Just trying to learn about thier new toys.

A NAC code is very similar to PL/DPL tones/codes. It allows the radios to only un-squelch when the proper signal is received. Your digital scanner will not require a NAC code - I'm pretty sure that none of the scanners out right now will decode NAC codes (I wish they did!! - if they do and I am mistaken, please tell me how to find them!).

Just as listening to any conventional system, tones are not required to receive a signal - they just help cut the noise out if in another area or if someone is on the same frequency. NAC codes are the same thing - just for P25 stuff.

So, if you were to program a Astro Saber capable of receiving P25 I guess a NAC code would work if you knew what it is and programmed it in?

Yes, a correct NAC code is required to listen if you set any NAC code, but you can monitor any NAC code if you set the radio to "monitor" as I previously posted.

$F7E is a "special function" NAC code. It allows for reception of any P25 signal encoded with any NAC. However, a scanner should not need a NAC entered. It is after all a receiver, not a radio capable of transmitting on a radio system. mam1081's advice should get you going.
