I've installed many drive thru systems. Typically There is a VHF and HF freq for full duplex on the system, some VHF half duplex systems exist and some hard wired digital systems in the ghz range exist.

I used to order fast ? food? from my apartment 4 blocks away years ago, just for fun and just because I could!
On a boring friday night I'd sit in the parking lot a few hundred feet away and chat with the cute redhead at the drive up, just because I could!
These days I can't stomach the stuff...

My local McD's is licensed to broadcast on 154.57000 and 154.60000. I live about a block away and I've never picked up anything.

Well, often times an establishment may have a licence for certain frequencies but may either have never implemented them or have since changed equipment and now they may be on some other freq. now.
