Howdy gang, I have finally jumped into the big smartphone age and upgraded to a Droid X, it will be arriving tomorrow. Anyways, I was curious how many gigs everyone uses a month if they are heavy RR feed listeners? News this week is that Verizon will introduce Tiered data plans later this year and do away with the $30 unlimited data plan.

I've read reports online that some people use over 10 Gigs a month on data usage and some said it's near impossible to come close to 5 Gigs LOL. This should be a fun experience, i've never got to play with a smartphone or even a blackberry.

I don't use my Droid to listen to feeds very much, but I do use the web browser and other data services (news, weather, stock quotes) quite a bit. Over the last six months, my average data usage has been around 220MB/month.

I don't listen to the feeds much on my phone through RR, I do use WIN500client every so often. Most of my data usage comes from Wifi tethering and I average around 5 gigs a month. I'm through Sprint though, so no tiered data plans yet.

Listening to a mono feed for 30 minutes will use around 3.5MB of data and listening to a stereo feed will use around 7MB of data.

Listening to a mono feed for an hour a day for 30 days will use around 210MB or 0.2 GB.

If you are on a light data plan, try WiFi.

Listening via WiFi cost's nothing as far as the cell data plan goes.

I can & have listened to the feeds for hours on my Moto Android via WiFi.

You can leave the phone on & in WiFi mode all data runs through the WiFi & the phone still works.

As far as Android apps go, ScannerRadio by Gordon rocks.

Verizon's "unlimited" plan is actually limited to 5GB, although I've heard of stories where people go over a few times and they say nothing has happened, but it's just something to be weary of.

In any case, just keep tabs on your online account and you can watch your data usage, if you find that you are using more then you are allowed, then you will need to adjust your usage. Keep in mind though that I've found people with brand new phones use it a lot more during the first few weeks then they will during the future months.

I listen to my mono RR feed on my iPhone where I'm limited to 2GB per month. I listen (on average) one to two hours per day in my car (not on wifi), and also surf the web, do email, text while driving, run over little kids, etc. By streaming RR, I can easily avoid capture from the local PD. I've never exceeded 1GB per month (usually much less than that even). You should be totally fine with 5GB.

I second the previous comment regaring using wifi when you can. I have wifi at home and at work, so really the only time I'm using cell plan data is when I'm on the road.

Ron

P.S. Yes, I was kidding about texting and driving. Although I do stream my RR feed while driving to work.

I have a friend that works for Verizon, he told me it really is unlimited(at this time), What is limited to the 5 gb a month is if you connect your phone to your computer via a USB cable and use the phone as a modem to get high speed internet.

I use Scanner Radio and listen most of the time and even with doing other stuff, my highest month so far has only been 2 gigs.

I've heard both ways, so I try to be extra cautious and not go over 5GB just to be safe.

Get Call Meter 3G for the Android. It will show you how much data you have used.
I just check the Verizon website, they also have an app for the droid that will tell you. It doesn't matter what your phone says you use, but what Verizon says you used.

This is true for all the major cell carriers (according to a Sprint rep) Its in the fine print for sprint contracts, that there will be a charge of $xx.xx per MB for any data overage exceeding 5GB in any month. I tether to my laptop using PDAnet, a program im sure sprint doesnt want me using, but streaming live music, multiple RR feeds and a occasional Hulu videos, I have yet to hit 5GB a month. 4.75 was my max one month. This is not everyday, but at least 3 or 4 work days out of the week.
