I'm looking for some help from the amateur radio gurus on this one. I have bought a small drone and I want to monitor aircraft in the area to make sure I am not interfering with any flights. What is the best way to go about this? Is there any way for me to get a licence to talk to aircraft so that I can warn them? I am located in the Yukon Territory in Canada. I realize that I'm quite uneducated about this, anything would be helpful.

Thanks,
Mark

Never mind interfering with aircraft radio - if you start making unauthorised flights in anything bigger than a model then the FAA are going to be very interested, especially if you start getting up into airspace where you can be seen on radar - the military are likely to be very touchy at moment. Phone your nearest manned airport and ask to speak to the Duty Controller and explain what you want to do - he's liable to shout down the phone quite a bit.

Um the FAA has no authority where the OP is. Please re-read what he posted. The OP is in Canada and such it would be Transport Canada that he would run afoul of. To the OP, go to the Eligah Smith Federal Building on Main Street in Whitehorse and talk to the Industry Canada folks about what you should do to be able to warn aircraft around you. Nav Canada or Transport Canada may also have info on where you can and can not fly your model aircraft.

How high do you plan on flying it? And how close to an airport of any kind are you? Down here in the Phoenix, AZ area, most helo's stay up around 2000-2500' unless it's a PD helo orbiting over a scene then they may drop to 1000-1500'.

Fixed wings, unless they're on approach to or departure from an airport stay higher. Hot air balloons will vary their altitude to stay with favorable winds, but they're slow and easily avoided (speaking as a former crew member lol)

Unless the OP is in Whitehorse, he will probably only see light prop planes, or helicopters. He is in Yukon Territory, Canada. Population 40-Ish thousand people. There is only one major airport, I would be suprised if any others even have a control tower besides CYXY.

Question directed to the OP: where in Yukon are you located?

As a former Yukoner, you are located in Yukon Territory, not The Yukon Territory... LoL just poking at you!

So I have spent a couple of days working this out through Industry Canada. Each operator has to get a Restricted Operator Certificate — Aeronautical (ROC-A), I'm pretty sure that's what you get when you get your private pilot's licence.

We are purchasing an IC-A6 (http://www.icomcanada.com/products/avionics/ic-a6aus_a24/Airband_IC-A6-A24 Brochure.pdf) to use on the ground.

We will need to get a mobile radio licence for this, with all the airports for THE Yukon on it. IC-2366: Mobile Radio Station Licence Application - Spectrum Management and Telecommunications

As for the drone we are flying an Ebee that has a wingspan of just under 1 meter. We will be flying up to 1000 meters above ground level. senseFly: eBee

Now all I have to do is go memorize the study guide and hone up on my phonetic alphabet.

Glad that you have gotten things worked out and are on the right track with this.

SenseFly eBee Mapping Drone Aircraft

Mark, I am surprised nobody has asked yet "what" you want to do with your new drone aircraft?
Do you want to fly one as a new hobby or perhaps just do security surveilence around your property?

SenseFly: eBee Model Info:
- 96cm wingspan
- 670g take-off weight
- 16MP camera, electronically integrated and controlled
- Lithium polymer battery
- 45 minutes of flight time
- 36-57km/h (10-16m/s) cruise speed
- Up to 45km/h (12m/s) wind resistance
- Up to 3km radio link
- Covers up to 1.5-10km2
- Linear landing
- Image resolution of 3-30cm/pixel (depending)

Drones, hmm another weapon that terrorists could use to target the white house. Kinda of off topic but did anyone see Olympus Has Fallen? A drone would have been more convening than a C-130.

Do these drones have cameras? Edit- Just looked at their website and I see the closet place to buy one is in Canada, how can I purchase one in the U. S. ?

The post before yours mentions a 16MP camera.
I don't recall the make/model, but there's an R/C aircraft with 6 or 8 helicopter-like rotors that can carry a camera, too. I think they'd be fun to fly, but better manuverability than a fixed wing one.
