Need a little clarification please. When I select a frequency for a NXDN system in the FMP24 window (example 451.0250), and then the channel activity window shows a channel (example 83 as the CC), is 83 the Control Channel for the frequency I am currently on (see image) or could 83 actually be another frequency? I'm confused because I see channel 83 assigned to several frequencies in the same system.

The answer is found on these pages..
The same frequency 451.025 has the same CH ID 83 across the system in this case, not sure what different frequencies your referring too.. It's only listed as a CC for Lark1.

83 is the channel ID. 452.2 is the control channel for the south mountain site.

You'll need to go to freqs in dsdplus note pad and make a list for the nexedge96 and put in the freqs should be like this

NEXEDGE96, 64, 5, 83, 451.0250, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 5, 113, 451.4000, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 5, 141, 451.7500, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 5, 177, 452.2000, 0

Technically you could add it as such.. I'd add all the Frequencies/Channels from all the sites to one list.
NEXEDGE96, 64, 0, 83, 451.0250, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 0, 113, 451.4000, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 0, 141, 451.7500, 0
NEXEDGE96, 64, 0, 177, 452.2000, 0
Since the same Channels are used across all sites in the same system..
The 0 in the site value field tells DSD+ that the same channel numbers apply to any site received.

CH IDFrequency
83451.025

Note: The RAN that is decoded by DSD+ is generally also the Site number..

If you do not know the frequencies associated with the Channel ID, can you just put "0" in the Channel ID column and just use the frequencies on the license? There is a FleetTalk system here in GA that looks like has random Channel ID's assigned to frequencies. I have the CC frequency and Channel ID for that frequency on a few of the sites I can monitor.

I think I've got it now and learned a couple "tricks" along the way thanks to your help. I suppose it was the "CC" indicator that put me off thought. I've set up my list as suggested and will monitor during the week (not much business activity this weekend).

Thank-you all!!

They key thing is that the control channel can change. Right now it is 451.025.

CHID 83 <--> 451.025 ; on the system/site you are monitoring, 451.025 will always be CHID 83.

But CHID (or 451.025) will not always be the control channel.

On most trunked systems, there is more than one control channel. That way if something fails on the 451.025 transmitter, there is another frequency/transmitter to take its place automatically, and the site controller will make sure that happens. You might not know what one of the alternate control channels is right now (and it really doesn't matter since it would not be active as a control channel right now), but there very is likely one. And in fact, depending upon the system, the control channel may rotate amongst all frequencies on the sites - daily, weekly, etc.

So one day a channel that was delivering voice may be the CC and a channel that was the CC may be delivering voice.

That makes a lot of sense to me now. I started to keep a log (Excel sheet) to try to map my "finds" using DSD+. I would then log my "discoveries" (ex, the cc) and the next time I looked at the same data-set, the channel is not even making a peep. Drove me crazy...started blaming my antenna, weather, aliens...The pieces are finally starting to fall into place for me. Thank-you for your detailed explanation!

You're welcome. I'm glad to help you out. I probably should say one more thing, even though it'll just add confusion.

When I said CHID 83 will always be 451.025 on that particular site of that system, that's not quite a guarantee. The system programmer can manually assign any channel ID to any frequency they want and really cause some confusion. But, with that said, after the system and/or site is already set up, they are very unlikely to change things like that.

Take it easy

Mike
