OK... I'll admit that it sounds a bit rediculous that I *seem* to be the only one who has had this problem. However... The *published* `clear' code for the DSP upgrade appears to be *WRONG* for the PRO-2096 & PRO-96s around here! The *published* `code' [Even in the November issue of Monitoring Times!] reads:
While the "WELCOME" message is still on the screen, press 0, then PGM, then CLEAR, then ENTER.
The *only* way I can get the PRO-2096 & PRO-96s around here to `clear' the DSP `upgrade' is to do the following:
While the "Welcome" message is on the screen, press 0, then press CLEAR, then press ENTER.
If *I* press 0, press PGM, then press CLEAR, like the `*published*' / `*publicized*' sequence I get thrown right out to `normal' operation. If I press 0, press PGM, then press ENTER I get sent to the "DSP LOAD PC/IF Port Flash Mem"screen. (Could it be that it is a `typo' and the majority of the people who `publicize' it haven't actually used it, have done it the way I discovered yet figure that they experienced FFS [Fat, or Fumble, Finger Syndrome] and they had really done it the `typo' way without realizing it, *or* since the Ghods at RS have `spoken' it is `the way' it is to be done no matter what? {AARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!} I mainly say this because not only have I seen it here on TRR but I have seen it many other places and finally seeing it in the November 2006 issue of Monitoring Times at the end of an article, actually the third `subject' in the "Scanning Report", that purports to explain what the `upgrade?' is `supposed?' to do I finally `reached the end of my rope?' and, at the very least, want to mention that this appears to be a mistake. )
I've just `puttered along' all this time with the DSP version 1.3 in my scanners and never bothered clearing the `upgrade?' figuring that at the very least I would give it a chance to `prove' itself to be useful and would `attack' the `problem' when it came time to remove it or replace it with something else that might `come down the pike'. (Or, hopefully, maybe not even have to be bothered by it because RS finally offered an `upgrade' that would take care of whatever this one was `supposed' to do along with making 700MHz DTRS trunking available on the 2096 /96 scanners ala' the version 1.4 CPU `upgrade'.) However... After all this time I've come to the conclusion that despite what everyone seems to be claiming it really isn't `worth a hoot' on the Colorado DTRS 99% of the time and in that remaining 1% the difference is just *barely* noticable. In fact, at least with the PRO-2096 & 96s available (3 PRO-2096s and 2 PRO-96s that are `mine' and a `set', 1 PRO-2096 and 1 PRO-96, that is my `daughter's'.) listening to the various agencies / departments I mainly listen to, I have noticed that quite a few transmissions (While I never actually set out and put pencil to paper and made `marks in column `A' or `marks in column b' all the time, `column A' would be `populated' with at least 2 - 2½ more `marks' than would `column B'! ) are a lot better on the 2096 / 96s that haven't had the `upgrade'. (If I had the time, *space*, and money I *really* would like to have some of the fancy test equipment I've caught mention of. But, since I don't and only have what test equipment I use for repairing and restoring Hi-Fi / Stereo `gear', I've had to depend upon my equipment and my senses. [You should have heard the complaints I got when I set up the test equipment! I `wiped out' almost a third of the available seating, along with a fair amount of floor space, in our living room and caused a whole heck of a lot of H&D over who got to sit where. 'Course SWMBO and I still had *our* seating. {GRIN!} It was the 2 children who were the cause. (Those of you who *may* have a pair, daughter about 13 and son about 9, may understand?]) After enduring the H&D for several weeks, though SWMBO claims it was more like months, I finally packed up the equipment and went back to using `calibrated senses'.) Today I finally decided that even *if* there was an announcement that RS was going to offer the aforementioned `upgrade' I was going to clear out the DSP V.1.3 `upgrade?' and set about doing so. (On all of the scanners I had installed the `upgrade', 2 PRO-2096s and 2 PRO-96s, around here the only steps that actually cleared it were the ones I outlined above *not* the `published' / `publicized' ones.)
Just an `Olde Fart's' 2¢ worth. {WAN GRIN!}
