DTRS Demo-3 talkgroup

Yesterday afternoon (Sunday) I heard state Assemblyman Josh Penry doing a radio check with "Frank" on TG 2370. They had to try it a couple of different times before they could hear each other (great demo of the system!).

It sounded as if Penry was in Grand Junction and Frank was possibly in Denver. Penry seemed impressed that he could talk to Frank this way in spite of the multiple tries, and garbled trasmissions.

Last night when CSP was chasing a DUI suspect west on I-70 from Bennett towards Aurora, the Disp couldn't make out the chase car about half the time. She kept saying, "you were digital, repeat" They finally stopped him though. It must be marginally engineered for coverage, IMHO---

Keep in mind though that some dispatchers, although most are good, use the "digital" as a crutch when they dont hear something or not paying attention. They just know that they cant get away with saying "last car you were static or scratchy.

She was definately paying attention, and I was listening; it was garbage about 25% of the time. Once they were stationary it improved. It sounds SO GOOD when it works. I wonder what the troops really think??

I love the radio system..I came on under the old system and I could be on the north side of Greeley and never hear a car on the south side of Greeley. Then we went to the new system and it was wierd actually hearing everybody and not having to have the dispatcher relay info

I guess most would agree with you, If something really hairy happens then the interopability features will be great.
I have some concerns about having "All the eggs in one basket" so to speak. I hope the infrastucture that connects all the sites together is super-redundant; and also the backup power systems.

Already a lot of people have noticed that thir new VOIP phones are nowhere near as reliable as Ma Bell was :?

Once you are outside the metro area most troopers are trying very hard to keep there VHF radios also and one of my friends was sucessful until his cruiser went to Golden for service and it returned sans VHF radio.

we were talking about that the other day, most troops will have their VHF radios for a long time. it only makes sense to have a backup

Does anyone know if the old state VHF freqs are being renewed with the FCC? I am sure some of them are such as State 3, but what about others? Also, anyone know when CSP in Summit County is slated to switch to digital if they have not already? Haven't been able to scan for a while!

DTRS coverage is live and well in Summit County but CSP and CDOT are only using it for a little car to car action but once Craig dispatch gets up to speed I would expect a migration to DTRS in the next few months. Many of the Denver based troopers that work in Summit are already using it daily to go 10-41 and such.

Summit

I was talking with someone from CSP summit county last week, he told me that they use the VHF most of the time because the digital system won't work in many areas of the county. He said that they tend to just use the VHF instead of trying to transmit on DTRS, and then having to repeat everything on VHF because the digital wouldn't work.
