New technology?

I don't think so. Mobile data terminals were first used by DeKalb County Police way back in the early 1980's. They called them KDT's at the time. They were also installed in fire and EMS vehicles. The mobile data terminals then became laptops about ten years ago. But it's all the same thing...NCIC checks, dispatch calls, car to car and car to dispatch messaging (emails) have all been around for a long time. It's just new to GSP, which is just now catching up with the rest of the public safety world. It would be nice if GSP would upgrade it's World-War II-era simplex communications too and catch up with everybody else. No, not some overpriced trunking system...but at least some repeaters so the guys in the field can hear each other. Making the posts digital would help too. Maybe in ten years GSP will announce their getting "cutting edge" two way technology to catch up with everybody else.

Not only were they first used in DeKalb, but they were one of the first in the nation to use 800 MHz (where the KDT's were). The TRS for DeKalb is probably close to 20 years old, and it wasn't until a few years ago that they switched from Type I to Type II.

Alpharetta is using the license plate scanner. I love it when the self righteous people try to say that scanning their plate is an invasion of their privacy. Hmmm, I never hear that there was a law that gave you the RIGHT to drive versus a privilege. In Florida, your license plate is public information!

I knew this issue would come up.
There is already case law on this in GA. Officers do not need any reason to observe your license plate and run a query of said plate on GCIC/NCIC. A license plate is property of the state and your registration information is already on file with the state so its not private to begin with. As long as the officer is in a place where he is legally allowed to be he can view your plate and query it.
A license plate scanner just does this same thing for the officer automatically, and it doesn't even reveal your information to the officer unless your wanted, stolen car, no insurance, amber alert, etc.
When I was in uniform patrol I used to run hundreds of tags by manual entry a shift looking for stolen cars and wanted people. Almost never came up empty. I could care less about tickets, I wanted the career criminals. This device helps officers do the same thing.

Didn't say it was wrong. /\/\ike was making a point about how drivers think they have a "RIGHT" to drive. It truly is a "priviledge". And regarding the license plate reader, any technology that can keep the LEO's eyes on the road instead of locked onto his MDT, is better and safer for all around:)

Amen! The courts should, by law, force those bleeding heart civil rights lawyers to defend the criminal who committed a crime against that lawyer! See how fast their venue changes!

It's truly a shame that LEO can't do their job without being hampered by people saying that they are "violating thier civil rights". I have only one thing to say about it - If you didn't do anything wrong, what do you have to worry about?

Dekalb was not the first, actually the Cobb County Water System was on type I trunking, April of 1985 IIRC. DK bought the similar Privacy Plus type I trunking in 1987. Then upgraded to Smartnet I after it became available (after they found out what Jackson county and other MotoTURDO public safety users will, that business radio systems don't work well in certain public safety situations.)

The city of Miami's 800 Privacy Plus system was actually the first agency to go 800MHz PP trunking, in early 1985.

If you recall Mike, the great Motorola/Manuel Maloof scandal of that year where Motorola wined and dined Dekalb county commissioners including paying for prostitutes to push the sale of that system.

The license plate scanners have been in use on Cobb PD COPE and CAGE cars here in "da hood" zone 2 and zone 3 since late 2006.

Oh wow, the old Manual Maloof days! I could tell you lots of stories. I went to school with his son Mike, who I think took over Manual's Tavern long time ago. Wonder if it's still there? It used to be the "hip" place for reporters to hang out and hear all the dirt of metro Atlanta politics.

I know a guy I won't name who was the service writer(wrote maintenance contracts for pubic safety) for Motorola back in the 70s and 80s. The stories he has about Burgess and friends would shock you. Unreal the corruption even back then.
