Does the skip occur at a predictable time, or does it just happen whenever it feels like it? I'm new to the whole skip thing and I wanted to know if it was predictable so I knew when to listen to the scanner.

It all depends on the weather, sunspots and other factors. I'm not 100% sure, but, I think there is some information in the wiki area of the site. Also, there are some VERY intelligent people on here about skip/tropo. Also, look through some of the other posts in this forum. It should help ya out as well.

Predicting Skip

For ducting skip check this site:

http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

This site shows when the MUF (maximum usable frequency) climbs into the low band:

Consider the Yahoo skip group:

Sporodic E has no exact predictability. Add early warning frequencies to your scanner. This list is a good start:

Check this link out. It is a very good demonstration of how propagation is effected by the atmosphere. How skip works and such. Once you watch this flash demo and read through, you should have a better understanding of SKIP and how it happens.

THIS ONE IS AWESOME CHECK IT OUT:
