Duluth PD Radio Traffic

Has anyone else noticed that Duluth PD radio traffic has moved from talkgroup 37804 to 37801? Seems odd to me that they are simulcast on the same talkgroup as the Sheriffs Department... Can't wait until the migration to ARMER is complete.

I noticed that too. It didn't come to much after the CC changed.

I don't know if it will remain on this talkgroup.

Duluth will be on the south LE talkgroup with the switch to ARMER

Yeah, I do find it kinda weird that they would simulcast on the sheriffs channel. I thought duluth was suppose to get 6 ops groups(3 or 4 of them in the clear and the others encrypted/private). I do notice a new talkgroup(37812) which appears to be a Duluth Police talkgroup however.

I have only heard DPD units on it, also. It was referred to as the "Info Channel".

Duluth/State Patrol new freq.

Well, it's finally time to dump my 1984 vintage Regency scanner. I live in Duluth, & I would like to know what the best scanner is I could purchase for 200 dollars or less so I can pick up the new ARMER freq. I'm looking at the GRE PSR 410, Uniden BCT8, Uniden BCT15x, or the Uniden Bearcat BC355N. What's the best one for what I'll need? I had 155.595, 155.415, 154.920, 155.955, 155.355, 155.640, 154.310, & 155.280. Thank you.

Well, considering that you didn't specify new or used and also didn't say if you want base/mobile or handheld, I will shoot from the hip and say a used Uniden BC796 from Ebay.

I also noticed that you mention the best one for what you need. I have pretty much given up on recommending most scanners to most hobbyist unless they are up to the task of programming, typically with a computer, upgrading firmware, etc. As a result, I am now suggesting the Uniden Home Patrol HP-1 to most people. It is just about dead simple to use. It is unlikely that you will find a used one for $200, though.

There have been enough issues with some of the earlier digital, trunk-tracking scanners that will end up frustrating many users. Granted, a Radio Shack PRO-96/2096 can be reasonably priced, but when you learn what "motor boating" is on ARMER you will wish you spent the extra money.

Good luck. It will be a challenge, but in the end it is a fun system for you to listen to.

You have to get a digital radio. None of the above will work for you. Keep on eye on this website, I picked up a great used Pro 106 for $220 last spring.

Thanks for the advice. I've been scanning for 30 years now, & I guess I'm kind of old school. The digital age has caught up to Duluth & my hobby. I'm trying to avoid the Home Patrol, because I like the hands on, do it yourself programing. That's part of the fun. I started when we had to buy the two prong crystal's you'd get at Northwest Radio in downtown Duluth. I'll keep an eye out for the Pro-106 & the Pro-197 on EBay.

Just be aware that if you go with GRE or Radio Shack scanners, like the Pro-106 & the Pro-197, the future outlook for support is sort of unknown right now. It might be a non-factor, but I have had electronic devices in the past in which I needed support only to find the company is gone, so just FYI.....

Due to circumstances beyond its control, General Research of Electronics of Japan (GRE)
is temporarily not able to manufacture the GRECOM and Radio Shack branded radio scanners.

The Chinese Government’s plan to redevelop the area where the GRE factory had been in
operation for over ten years finally forced its closure. Anticipating this eventuality,
GRE was in the process of building a new factory but unfortunately the cost of raw materials,
labor and increased taxes created a heavy financial investment burden that could not be
effectively recovered.

GRE America continues to market, support and service the GRECOM branded scanners and is
contractually committed to keep the Library Database updated and current. GRE America
will continue to market, service and support Alinco’s radio products without any interruption.

We sincerely apologize for this unfortunate turn of events. GRE is proceeding to establish
a contract with a new factory and believes it will be able to restart the manufacturing in
the near future.
