Every time I plug in a USB cable, it immediately jumps to Mass Storage mode without giving me the usual menu option asking whether I want Serial or Mass Storage mode. Does the HP-1 offer that menu option, or is it hard-coded to jump to Mass Storage mode every time a USB cable is plugged in?

Do you have the driver (serial driver) installed? Does the HP have the extended options enabled? There are no serial features without it.

I can't compare as all 3 of mine have ut installed.

FWIW - I have one that always wants to use the Uniden driver and go to serial so I can't do mass storage. I have to kill the driver every time.

I don't really care about using the serial option, I just want to be able to plug in a USB cable without the scanner immediately shutting down.

When USB is connected, it jumps to Mass Storage if you don't have the Extreme Upgrade. If you do have the Extreme Upgrade, it jumps to the menu for the choice between serial and mass storage and stays there until you make a choice (there are some menu options that show below the serial/mass storage menu, but they are inactive at that point). No way around that. Even if you connect the USB cable before turning the scanner on, you get mass storage immediately.
