I could try to correct you, but I would be wrong. (almost)

Very unscannable, very encrypted, and next to impossible to "monitor"- unless you have about $25,000.00 to spend on one item... and about 3 years in school full time to learn how to use it... Than you can listen to all the mobile calls in the area.

...Did I mention its rather illegal to own that expensive piece of equipment as well? ;)

I have heard they have a listenable "tac" channel, but its rarely used. I have heard them patched in with York quite a bit thou.. so if you can listen to York, you may hear them when they are doing something close to the region's borders.

There's nothing illegal about owning a piece of test equipment and the last time I checked, it was legal to use it as well.

I was under the impression its legal to own, but illegal to decode/decrypt a "encrypted" transmission...? (which, iden is, from what I have been told...?)

If iden was encrypted, then the service monitor would be useless without an encryption key.

In that case, Durham would have nothing to worry about therefore there would be no need to outlaw service monitors.

ah neat, I learn something new everyday..

So, now I need to find a rather expensive service monitor- for dirt cheap- and so does a friend of mine... lol!

Aren't those sim channels VHF?

139.680 146.2 PL

Those 3 800MHz ones are likely simplex channels for the trunk system.

Motorola used to make an r750 that would support analog voice. But Durham isn't using that model...infact I've seen a few of them using the new r765IS which definatly doesn't support analog at all. The only "simplex" mode is the 900MHz DirectTalk mode.

According to the Motorola Product Sheet (http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Business/_Documents/Specifications/Static Flies/R765_Spec_Sheet.pdf), they don't support analog at all.

It's a guess, but is that 800MHz stuff perhaps Trbo?

Motorola makes an 800MHz radio that is capable of Type II SmartNet, with an upgrade path to MotoTRBO...perhaps they're going over to that for Works and Fire? Who knows.

re: Durham Region simplex channels

I also noticed the 851.300 freq had activity lately that sounded like iDEN buzzing away.
This signal was very strong near the lake, so I looked it up on both TAFL and FCC databases.
Only Durham listed on TAFL.
Looked on FCC.gov site and bingo, there you have it...licenced to NEXTEL in Monroe County and Erie county New York across the lake from us. That is why it sounds like iDEN, because they are the same type of system.Since rebanding started in the U.S. there have been some changes to frequency use in the 800Mhz public safety band

I have heard sparse activity on the Durham licenced simplex freqs but the are definitely analog,
usually used for fireground comms in ie: large industrial area fires, or if units can't reach each other via the trunk system,

Yeah they use iDen now.. no more conventional. As for the Motorola r750 that excalibur mentioned I was talking to a officer last weekend with one.. so they definatly have some left in their fleet.. 100% digital use of course.

Don't worry. Durham (as well as York and Peel) are all looking at a P25 system as Telus will no longer support their iDEN system past 2013 so they're forced to migrate to a real TRS.

aaaaand here comes more "oMgZ0rz p25 eNc" posts....

I would rather they go provoice than P25.. we all know P25 is pretty much always going to be ENC on a new system.
