More important, if you are on the wrong frequency, you can be in for serious trouble and big fines. You could be unknowingly interfering with a public safety agency. Those radio require a ham license at the very least and have the ability to operate on a wide range of frequencies within a band. If you are on a PS or government frequency, the FCC will go after you sooner or later. If they are VHF radios, they are not legal on MURS, and the UHF version is not legal on FRS. If they are 800 mhz radios, there are no legal frequencies for the public use. There is a document called EF Johnson decoder that will tell you what frequency band your radios are in.
