On a recent trip to southern Alabama on Chapel business, one of our benefactors donated an E F Johnson VHF mobile to our Chaplain Responder group. It is in the Challenger Series # 71610A090A with FCC type acceptance number for the series - ATH90F2427151.

We believe that it is a 25 watt unit and would like to know what the channel capacity is for this model.

If anyone in the eastern half of Wisconsin has programming capabilities for this particular radio, please advise. It is currently on a simplex non-CTCSS frequency around 153 MHZ and we need this to be reprogrammed to our licensed frequency downband 2 MHZ from there, with CTCSS. This radio will be used in the Gulf Coast states during our post-hurricane victim responses.

Thank you.

The root model # is 7161, which does make it VHF. There are variations of that radio line from 8 channels to 99 channels. I don't have the model breakdown in front of me, but you should be able to find a radio shop to program it without too much difficulty.

One of our colleagues from Minnesota contacted me and recommended Viking Communications in Milwaukee. I spoke with their Service Supervisor and shipped the radio to them for re-programming. I'll have it back by Friday. Thanks for the feedback and info.
