EarPhone won't stay in Remote Speaker Mic

I have a Motorola Commander II Remote Speaker Mic. Use it on an XTS3000 portable radio.
I want to use an earphone plugged into the jack on the Mic. The earphones that I have won't stay in the jack. The plug goes all the way into the hole but doesn't feel like it 'clicks'. The earphone does work if I hold it pressed in.
It is almost like there is a chunk of foam in there or something. I can't see anything in there. I haven't tried digging around in there with a paper clip or anything.

Is the jack on these Motorola Speaker mics special?
Is the plug a different length that the jack on the Kenwood Remote Speaker Mics?

I found a plug that works. The LEFT one in the first picture works. The other two don't work.
I finally looked at the speaker mic properly and noticed that there is actually an indented section.
The body of the plug has to be small enough to go in this indented section for it to work.
That limits my choice for earpieces, but now I know what to look for.

Could you shave a little off the connector on one that doesn't fit to see if it fits down further and snaps in? I had to do that with an 1/8 to 1/4 adapter to fit my computer speakers.

Early iPhones had a similar issues as the socket was recessed in the edge of the phone. This created short pigtail adaptors that would fit the phone on one end and anyone's earphones on the other. Apple got the message and made changes in later versions.

I have used a straight edge razor blade to carefully change the square edge to a cone shape that taper to the shaft of the connector. It did not compromise the structure of the plug and allowed it to mate with the socket as it should.

I will probably carve the body of the connector down.
The one that I want to use is the picture with the green background, upper right.
That plug is probably better than the one that already works because the body is actually 90° square with the plug and not angled out.
NOT angled out should have a lower profile with the edge of the speaker mic.
